02/12/2021 19:59 | "some livestock eaten" | smithie6
02/12/2021 11:45 | Seems to me that the TPLF are admitting the Government Forces are driving them back. Very good news for the PM, and if the TPLF have caused the destruction reported, I am sure the people will soon join the State Forces to ensure they cannot threaten the break up of the Country again. "Huge damage in Ethiopia's Amhara region - survey A survey conducted by Ethiopia's Amhara regional government has revealed that the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) carried out massive destruction and looting in five zones of the region, officials say. The regional planning and development bureau, which co-ordinated the survey, said it had occurred in areas the rebels still held and in areas retaken from them. The TPLF has not yet commented, but has previously denied similar allegations. The head of the bureau, Animut Belete, said the total cost of the destruction was estimated to be 280bn Ethiopian birr ($5.8bn, $4.4bn), but the amount was likely to rise as more reports came in. The survey covered 45 districts in five zones. It did not include the big city of Dessie or the industry hub of Kombolcha. He said the destruction was severe within the agriculture sector. "Three agricultural research institutes, vehicles, tractors and crops and irrigation infrastructure have been severely looted and damaged; livestock killed, looted and eaten," Mr Animut told BBC Amharic. Hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, businesses, roads and tourist sites had also been damaged, he said. "Students, workers and community members who have been trained in the enterprises have lost their jobs," he added. Damaged office Amhara regional governmentCopyright: Amhara regional government The scene of an office apparently left in chaos by the TPLFImage caption: The scene of an office apparently left in chaos by the TPLF In the past few day, Ethiopia's federal government said it had retaken key towns and cities from the TPLF in Amhara and the neighbouring region of Afar. This included Lalibela, a Unesco world heritage site famous for its rock-hewn churches. The TPLF said it made a "strategic withdrawal". The federal government previously said that more than 2,000 schools and about 1,500 hospitals and health centres had been damaged and looted by the rebels in Amhara and Afar. The TPLF launched an offensive in the two regions in an attempt to reach the capital, Addis Ababa, and the border with Djibouti. It accused the Ethiopian military and allies forces of committing widespread atrocities in its stronghold of Tigray - allegations which they denied." | clocktower
02/12/2021 08:02 | Maybe if there was a shortage of goats, the skin price would rise on a temporary basis and they would be able to not only reduce the huge £15m stockpile but get higher returns from it, adding a lot to the bottom line. However, the country’s huge, and many are already starving, so better that the goats got eaten than people starve. At least Pittards demand for skins helps make goat keeping a viable business and h pls the economy over there. | clocktower
01/12/2021 22:53 | but if one side defeats the other, or just their advance on AA will the number of skin carrying goats have been affected ?! (soldiers often getting hungry !) | smithie6
01/12/2021 22:51 | interesting point ! (but Churchill, for example, did a stunning job without being in the front line with a rifle himself (but yes he had some/lot of military history) | smithie6
01/12/2021 17:57 | More Good News! Although it's to be confirmed, it does seem the Governments forces are winning the war now. I bet our PM would not go to the front if Britain went to war. | clocktower
01/12/2021 16:30 | Cheers S - I will amend, I should read what I write - old age and lazy. Anyway better news coming out of Ethiopia if true. If this carries on I will be buying back in when it is confirmed that the PM is in charge. | clocktower
30/11/2021 18:23 | (typo 2 posts ago "if you dissent") | smithie6
30/11/2021 15:40 | "Ethiopia says vital route into Tigray via Afar now clear A spokeswoman for Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says "the belligerence of the TPLF" is to blame for a blockage of aid into the Tigray region. The only viable overland route into Tigray has been through the neighbouring Afar region, and Mr Abiy's spokeswoman told journalists the rebels have been trying to "choke off the Afar corridor" but that federal forces had since cleared the way. The TPLF has previously blamed the government for the blocked route, while USAID says the government has "created de facto blockades, making communications, banking, and other vital services needed for aid efforts almost non-existent". More than five million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance in the Tigray, Afar and Amhara regions, according to the United Nations. It says 100 trucks a day are needed to reach Tigray alone to meet needs there. At the same press conference on Tuesday, the spokeswoman for Mr Abiy's office was also asked to name the foreign powers Ethiopia accuses of attempting to weaken the country. "I think the forces know who they are so I’ll leave it at that," she replied." | clocktower
29/11/2021 13:14 | China are and have invested a lot running a rail connection from Eth to AA I believe - so there maybe support coming from them in some ways as well I guess. I am just as suspicious of our own Government and media as I am of others, they are all up to providing fake news when the hat fits. We are all living in Police State in one form or another, just have to look what happens if you dissent in the Netherlands for instant. | clocktower
29/11/2021 11:26 | maybe Russia can help the Eth. military & in return set up military/missile bases, close to the middle east & the important Gulf of Oman shipping route !! | smithie6
29/11/2021 09:55 | Russia seems to have a more positive outlook on Ethiopia and the calm in AA. The signs are a little more positive it seems to me but for how long. | clocktower

26/11/2021 14:48 | Bit of conflicting news coming out of Ethiopia today: PM at the front line saying they are re-taking territory. | clocktower
25/11/2021 13:11 | The news does not get any better either S6 - It seem he is already on the front line and the rebels are within 140 miles of the City now. | clocktower
25/11/2021 12:07 | the PM going to the front line sadly it reminds me of Edward Heath & the UK Chancellor 'we will do whatever is needed to support the value of the £' was it 24-48 hours later & they gave up, the market was more powerful | smithie6
24/11/2021 11:49 | More countries tell their citizens to get out of Ethiopia. Rebels close in, and Haile Gebrselassie ready to go to the front line. | clocktower
23/11/2021 14:38 | Words of War continue: Becoming a hot seat that I would not like to be running a business from at present. I will be amazed if it is not having some effect on PTD - maybe the supply of skins or some of the labour force detained and worse still, is transporting goods out of the country I guess. | clocktower
21/11/2021 14:07 | ...sounds like the Govt. military has been making a hash of it, from the info I have read.. | smithie6

17/11/2021 13:11 | Concerning Todays news S. "The US State Department has warned American citizens in Ethiopia that it will not be able to evacuate them if the security situation worsens suddenly. A senior US official urged American citizens to leave Ethiopia immediately, saying that Washington had no plans to organise a mass evacuation, as it did in Afghanistan. The US and the African Union have been pressuring the Ethiopian government and rebels in the Tigray region to end their conflict, which has killed several thousand people and displaced two million since it started a year ago. American officials say the US has held off approving sanctions against the warring parties, because peace negotiations are still active." "A report by the United Nations human rights agency says at least 1,000 people, mostly ethnic Tigrayans, have been arrested since the government declared a state of emergency on 2 November. Under the six-month emergency, the authorities have sweeping powers to arrest people, detain suspects without trial, and conduct house searches without warrants. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said “at least 1,000 individuals are believed to have been detained over the past week or so – with some reports putting the figure much higher”. The statement said detention conditions are generally poor and many detainees are held in overcrowded police stations. Ten local UN staff members who were arrested on 9 November remain in detention. “Most of those detained are reported to be people of Tigrayan origin, arrested often on suspicion of being affiliated to or supporting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF),” the UN said. In the past, police said the arrests were not ethnically motivated but targeted supporters of the TPLF, which has been fighting the federal government for the past year and is now advancing towards the capital." | clocktower |
