Can’t buy any at the moment, I’m sure if they thought this was going down, they would be throwing them at me. Or am I being cynical.

The planet is greatful too. China dumping their old dirty tech coal on Africa.

Hi greenelf/GUSS,

China currently gets approx 50% of its energy needs met by coal, and is building plants like crazy, still expecting coal to be 35% of likely much larger demand in 2050. I'm sure it would love to get its hands on any GE patented clean-burn technology that became available.

GE is caught between a rock an a hard place : it overpaid when it acquired the coal tech a few years back. If the Dems win, they'll almost certainly nix coal, if Trump wins, there's a tussle with China...

GE has contractually committed to support its legacy coal business, my guess is that some third party less in need of virtue-signalling will snap the business up and life will go on.

The Mozambican people would be rather grateful , I'm sure.

Neutron Jack was a firm believer that 'money talks'.

Wouldn't surprise me if they already had someone lined up as alternative to supply the equipment, not that they would ever admit to that of course.

I bet GE are just backing out because of political pressure but want to make it sound like they are taking the moral high ground on the environment.

Well there's certainly less balls to juggle that's for sure.American GE and Chinese CMEC amidst a trade war probably would have needed some careful treading.

If this is now going to be a fully Chinese project then does that mean:
Less political interference
Less health and safety
Less environmental concerns
Faster delivery
More Proffit ???

Just saying.

But has the finance to build polluting coal plants. Sad situation.

Sadly that continent doesn't have the luxury or finance to build such clean power sources, the infrastructure is already in place for this plant, they will just be getting the equipment from a Chinese supplier instead, and that actually makes more sense.

Inevitable. Coal is an industry in its deathrows. Not something to invest in. Africa shozld use its abundant sunshine.

Nothing until now on official documentation has shown it being part of the plan though was always that it is scalable. Now there is time lines showing the scaling

It's always been the plan to have phased increase in output starting with 300MW. That's nothing new.

Hi all,

Hat-tip to CF73 on l s e, who kindly shared his research :

.."The Integrated Master Plan

Mozambique Power System Development, November 2018: Final Report

See Pages ES-4 to ES-5

See Tables; showing Mozambique/ EDM plans for coal and power coming out of Tete (our Project).

300MW coming on line 2023

300MW coming on line 2026

300MW coming on line 2029

300MW coming on line 2030

hxxps://www.edm.co.mz/en/document/reports/integrated-master-plan-2018-2043

Total 1200MW, where “…other power plants that were looking to be developed at the time we last did the [Transmission] study, have fallen away.” (NCCL CEO Hanno Pengilly’s own words: Proactive Interview):

Where our Transmission study enabled developments around/ financial close on ($127m) on the Transmission System/ Interconnector Live and Substation in our area (paid for by Germany, World Bank and Norway) i.e. the necessary infrastructure for our Billion$$$ project!

Following signing of the SHA TS, we get to keep 40% of this, with CMEC/ China keeping 60%. China will also be finding the larger percentage of the funding required.

The staged approach is also a very plausible way of NCCL keeping all 40%, leveraging the revenue/ profit from the 300MW to raise debt for the 2nd 300MW, in 2026; and then the two of those being used to leverage for debt the next two 300MW units, in 2029 and 2030 respectively.."

It was always scaleable to that. Some have done more research than others.

Interestingly, it turns out the EDM have plans for 1200MW coming from Tete. Some good research and analysis out there.
