Government delays plan to sell Natwest stake by two years as banking turmoil sends share prices tumbling
The Treasury has pushed back plans to sell part of its stake in NatWest by two years after turmoil in the banking sector sent share prices tumbling.

The UK Government, which still owns 41.5 per cent of the bank after its bailout during the financial crisis of 2008, said it will aim to offload a 15 per cent stake by August 2025, instead of August this year.

This is to make sure that the taxpayer gets 'value for money' for the shares, which have been depressed in recent weeks after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and UBS' takeover of Credit Suisse raised fears over the stability of the financial system.

Well, we've got a trading plan update this morning, including a mention for the directed buyback option, but there is no specific explanation of why HMT hasn't gone ahead with a directed buyback this March. That's entirely a matter for the Treasury, of course, and the view they take on an ongoing basis.
