R20 LIMITED ("R20") HOLDINGS IN J SAINSBURY PLC AND MITCHELLS & BUTLERS PLC

R20 advises that it intends to continue to hold its shares in J Sainsbury plc and Mitchells & Butlers plc and that rumours and speculation to the contrary are unfounded.

Robert Tchenguiz, Chairman of R20, commented:

"Unfounded speculation is a disservice to other shareholders. Both companies have significant value in excess of current valuations and both have a strong future. As a significant shareholder, R20 will continue its policy of working constructively with the Boards and management teams of the companies in which it invests to realise their potential for attractive shareholder returns."

R20 announces that, through its associated companies, it owns or has interests in 76,761,583 shares in Mitchells & Butlers plc and 174,219,250 shares in J Sainsbury plc.

With the debt markets where they are now and R20/Banks pulling this deal there are no serious contenders. What is difficult to understand is why the board of M&B did not raise concerns about this some weeks ago.
