I was quite enjoying some of the sensible commentary on this thread but as is so often the case on this board, ruined by a mindless idiot.

When you listen to the West Wokies. Russia is already beaten !
It's odd that Russia are the ones annexing and giving grain ships permission to leave harbour .

I could be totally wrong here, but I think there is going to be a small rally. 540p? American markets looking positive and always leads the way. There's still huge risk out there for trading, I think a central bank policy error will eventually begin the dominoes by over doing the fight against inflation with dwindling demand. But more important than that I'll be picking up and reinvesting my dividend here. Also, if Russia loses this war then I expect a bigger rally, but I'm not sure on that outcome just yet. Though it seems inevitable.

Hello jeffian, yes indeed I did.

Re the 'trading in and out', it's simply a case of taking a profit when comparably much better yields are available elsewhere. Needs must.

Edit: checking my records, I see that the funds were switched back in July to DEC, (US energy producer) earning 14% with no WHT and the capital now at 12% profit. Elpirata is to thank for that one.

I remember you saying that to me on a certain bio-tech thread, blue!

As a relative newcomer to managed funds (I'm mainly a stockpicker), I have to say I don't really understand the rationale of trading in and out of them. I thought the whole point was that you picked a manager and let them do the work for you.

SS - whatever merit there may be in your viewpoint & argument, it is rather spoilt by the incessant repetition. Comes across as a bit too keen to influence, rather than just having the courage of your convictions and seeing how it pans out.

I'm no longer a holder here for now, got out months ago, so I've no 'other agenda', btw.

Tim - I'm similar. I've been investing for over 25 years. Can I trade? No. I'm hopeless! I simply buy and hold and use around 50% of my dividends as income and the rest I reinvest.

Do I like watching my portfolio go down in value? No. Do I panic? No. But must admit I'm tempted to at times!

Do I think my portfolio will be more valuable in 5 / 10 years-time? Yes.

Do I think it will continue to provide me with a reasonable income through dividends and fund drawdowns over the same time period? Yes (fingers crossed!!)

Do I think there'll be reasonable value to leave to my children? That's the plan.

My investment strategy? Patient optimism!!! Good Luck.

SS

Put it this way have been investing for myself and family for over 40 years and other than a brief dip into trading have made decent returns over that time.

I find it strange when people talk about bear markets/crashes as if they are unexpected to be honest am surprised we have gone this long without one, they are part of investing.

I hardly hold any individual shares these days.I do hold S&P etf's which I bought just after the covid drop which are still well in profit infact so far they are only slightly down due to sterlings strength.

I am well over 50% in cash and will drip feed money into the market as it falls.I rarely make major buys in strong uptrends.

As an example the current plan here is to buy lots if it drops probably down to around £3.50 if we get there.

With the S&P am quite happy to add down to around 2000, again if we get there.

These plans could of course change but thats the plan at the moment.

To me bear markets/crashes ect are times to accumulate stock for the long term.

Of course one of the downfalls of this plan is if it doesn't fall I remain partially invested but I accept that and of course it assumes at some point in the future things will improve which I believe they will.

Should add most of my investments are in a tax efficient SIPP or ISA which I have built up over the years,

SS - Yes. Another down day on US indices. I don't see a material risk to dividends unless individual company earnings start taking a hit. For that we'll have to wait and see. I think the decline is just an opportunity to bring some sanity back to some US share prices based on more realistic future earnings levels / future PE ratios.
