Good morning QANTAS

Interesting data on inflation, which was downward on food and up slightly on clothes and it should be the opposite.

Seems less discounts this year on clothes have you found that?

Although I haven't bought much I do feel there is less discounting on clothes, I think the retailers are getting far more savvy at not giving stock away below stock.

In Wales, we want more than being able to sing the Welsh national anthem. We are now lumbered with a useless Welsh LABOUR government, and that is a lot worse. Far, far worse. Great man. Great MP.

Stationery retailer WH Smith gained after it reported better-than-expected Christmas trading despite burning through £15m to £20m in cash a month during the current Covid-19 lockdown.

Diploma was also up after hailing a strong start to the year, with improved trends in underlying trading across all of its three sectors in the first quarter.

On the downside, office space provider IWG fell as it said it plans to cut costs after its hoped-for 2021 recovery was hit by the latest round of lockdown measures.

Dixons Carphone was in the red even as it maintained full-year guidance and reported a sharp rise in electricals revenue over the Christmas period, driven by people buying televisions and computers during the coronavirus lockdown. The company also said mobile phone total revenue plunged 40% as its Carphone Warehouse stores were closed under Covid restrictions.

Burberry sales fell in the third quarter as the impact of Covid-19 and fewer price cuts offset strong sales of full-price items. Reported retail revenue fell 4% to £688m in the three months to the end of December as coronavirus-related store closures averaged 7%. Comparable store sales fell 9% as Burberry reduced markdowns but full-price transactions rose at a "high single-digit" pace.

Famous for not being able to sing the Welsh national anthem while secretary for state for Wales. The guy, John Redwood, proves he is one lazy useless git.

Fishing for winsJANUARY 20, 2021 2 COMMENTS      As the government battles the virus we need more wins and optimism elsewhere. We need to get on with the great Brexit wins now we are free to set our own laws and taxes. This is now crucial for our fishing industry who feel let down. There is   scope for major  growth in investment and  jobs. The immediate task is to protect our fish stocks from plunder by  aggressive foreign  industrial trawlers, and to help the UK build capacity to fish the grounds in a sustainable way landing much more fish here in the UK. This requiresA ban on super large industrial trawlers. The Agriculture Department says there is no definition of a supertrawler . There can be. You could ban all boats of over 100 metres in length, or all boats of over 5000 deadweight tonnes. This would remove the huge Russian and Dutch vessels which dominate and leave more fish for our smaller boats. This would be very popular, and supported by Green groups.Cheap loan and grant schemes to build new under 100m boats for our expanded fishery in UK yards, and a scheme to allow purchase of second hand vessels from abroad which can also increase capacity. With interest rates so low for the government it would be easy to offer soft loans with long repayment dates to get new fishing people involved.Use available regional and development grant regimes to encourage harbour expansion around our coasts at suitable fishing locations.Speed up Freeports and Enterprise Zones, allotting enough to fishing areas and use them to attract new and additional fish and food processing.Help the UK fishing industry establish new markets for UK fish by adding value, using the fish in ready meals and frozen products, sending much more to fish hungry Asia. For shipping generally, reverse the Factortame ECJ judgement, restoring a minimum UK ownership requirement for UK flagged vessels.Draw up with our shipping industry improvements to requirements for the UK shipping Register to encourage expansion without diluting labour or safety standards.

John Redwood@johnredwood2hThe government needs to enforce the rights of U.K. traders to buy and sell into and out of Northern Ireland as they always have done in the past. The U.K. Union thrives on an open and free U.K. single market which the EU wants to disrupt with its approach to Northern Ireland.

QANTAS

Interestingly no trading statement issued for John Lewis this year, it was issued on the 9th January last year and no date in their diary!

I suspect they are having difficulty and don't want to release details how they have done due to lockdowns which has affected trade and they may have to update at any time after they consider what further action to take.
