'Consumers rein in spending but don’t go hungry'


A rise in people eating and drinking out in July was not enough to stop an overall fall in consumer spending after two consecutive months of rises, according to the latest Visa snapshot survey.

The warm weather and World Cup contributed to a 3.5 per cent increase in spending on food, drink and tobacco and a 2.5 per cent gain for hotels, restaurants and bars, according to Visa and economists at IHS Markit, who compiled the figures.

From the media...about time...


One of Britain's best-known retailers says Britain's tax system should be radically changed to stop online companies having "an unfair advantage", and being subsidised by the taxes of their rivals.

Justin King, former chief executive of Sainsbury's, has called for business rates to be halved, with the lost revenue replaced by a 2% increase in VAT.

He says those changes would not increase shop prices, but would mean companies such as Amazon paying a fairer share of tax.

Mks has failed to stay above 300p comfortably...hope not but me thinks Mks could be making new lows over the coming weeks months...hope for the best on a takeover or a merger with another retailer..
