04/1/2024 13:39 | M&S making headway, says CT’s Smith Columbia Threadneedle manager Jeremy Smith says retail stalwart Marks & Spencer (MKS) is making headway in its transformation, cutting costs and modernising its supply chain. The Citywire Elite Companies A-rated business is a top-10 holding in Smith’s CT UK Equity Alpha Income fund, where it makes up 4% of the £132m portfolio. The group benefited from a strong first half to 30 September, which included a ‘significant jump in year-on-year profit and revenues, driven by increased sales in the company’s food and clothing and home businesses.’ ‘Management credited the company’s cost reduction and supply chain modernisation schemes as factors in this success, while the investment in redesigning stores has also been beneficial,’ said Smith. ‘As free cashflows have turned positive, Marks & Spencer has managed to reduce debt and has reaffirmed its full-year forecasts.’ He noted the added bonus of the retail giant’s first post-pandemic dividend being announced, which will be paid this month. The shares eased 0.25% to 275.3p on Wednesday. They more than doubled last year. citywire.com | philanderer

Online sales make up circa a quarter só whilst not definitive I’d suggest the share is being talked up for the profit takers currently exiting. I’ve a small speculative short taken today against the consensus. Best of luck whatever way you are playing. | havinthelasttoast
