I think that's what you'd call jumping on the bandwagon Mr Smith. Incredible what these people consider worthy of comment. Pure self promotion

M&S making headway, says CT’s Smith

Columbia Threadneedle manager Jeremy Smith says retail stalwart Marks & Spencer (MKS) is making headway in its transformation, cutting costs and modernising its supply chain.

The Citywire Elite Companies A-rated business is a top-10 holding in Smith’s CT UK Equity Alpha Income fund, where it makes up 4% of the £132m portfolio.

The group benefited from a strong first half to 30 September, which included a ‘significant jump in year-on-year profit and revenues, driven by increased sales in the company’s food and clothing and home businesses.’

‘Management credited the company’s cost reduction and supply chain modernisation schemes as factors in this success, while the investment in redesigning stores has also been beneficial,’ said Smith.

‘As free cashflows have turned positive, Marks & Spencer has managed to reduce debt and has reaffirmed its full-year forecasts.’

He noted the added bonus of the retail giant’s first post-pandemic dividend being announced, which will be paid this month.

The shares eased 0.25% to 275.3p on Wednesday. They more than doubled last year.

An extra 8.5 days longer to get stock on shipping round the coast of Africa is a problem which will affect all large retailers and if something sells out fast replacements delays is a nuisance to say the least.

NEXT up circa 5% on good Christmas trading in particular full price sales up. Caution on shipping costs due to ongoing trouble in Red Sea and alternative routes adding to costs and delays....

Delays and shipping costs could also afect MARKS we will hae to wait on that one until MKS report.

Marks and Spencer’s traffic tanked in December. Online sales make up circa a quarter só whilst not definitive I’d suggest the share is being talked up for the profit takers currently exiting.

I’ve a small speculative short taken today against the consensus. Best of luck whatever way you are playing.

Makinbucks,

I predicted £3 by the time the sales figures came out so no.

Ian King on the business news mentioned Marks today and was talking to Interactive she mentioned a fund manager having MKS as 2024 buy.

All are awaiting sales figures now but good to see MKS in the blue on a red day.
