17/11/2023 08:50 | Britain's retailers suffered another weak month in October, official figures showed, in a sign that high interest rates are hurting the economy even in the run-up to Christmas.Retail sales volumes fell by 0.3pc in the month to September to their lowest level since February 2021, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).The drop was far more than analysts expectations of a 0.4pc gain and comes after retail sales were revised down for September to a drop of 1.1pc. Over the three-month period from August to October, sales volumes also fell by 1.1pc.Alex Kerr, assistant economist at consultancy Capital Economics, said the data "suggests higher interest rates are taking a bigger toll on real consumer spending". It comes amid hopes that the Bank of England might begin cutting interest rates early next year after separate data from the ONS showed the UK economy flatlined in the third quarter, while inflation fell in October to 4.6pc... 13/11/2023 10:55 | Today I decided enough is enough. M&S was my first substantial sell since I sold Carnival 3 years ago. Something exceptional has to happen for me to move out of any share, and here it was the substantial (deserved) rise over the last year. I'll revisit in 6 months - all things look good to me here, but there has to come a stage when cash is taken out. I'll put some into llpc, which is a bond giving a safe 6/7/8% income - divi income is what I live off, and atm, it's pretty easy getting an extra 8k tax free income from the sale proceeds. The rest of the cash will sit earning 0% in my isa while I decide where it goes, which previously has taken me months, but should be easier this time. | pierre oreilly

13/11/2023 04:05 | Marks and Spencer confirms exact opening date for Trafford Centre 'mega store' "Whether you’re looking for a big family food shop, the latest Autumn/Winter styles from our Clothing, Home & Beauty departments, or a mid-shop pit stop in our amazing new M&S Café – we’ve got you covered." Marks and Spencer has today announced the opening date for its massive new store in the Trafford Centre. The retailer has been feverishly transforming the site of the former Debenhams store over the past couple of months and will open to customers for the first time on November 30. Shoppers can expect to enjoy 'spacious and stylish' new clothing, home and beauty departments as well as a new-look marketplace-feel M&S Foodhall, set across a 98,000 sq ft commercial space. Customers can also expect a 138-seat M&S café, which has been described as having a 'an award-winning new design' by the retailer. In September, bosses announced that more than 180 news jobs were being created in readiness for the new Regent Crescent store launch. Staff at the existing M&S inside the shopping mall will transfer over to the huge new site, but the jobs announced were in addition to those existing roles. | johnwise
