27/12/2023 15:57 | Boxing Day footfall has edged up slightly, but visits to stores continue to remain below pre-pandemic levels as some retailers remained closed on the day after Christmas. The number of shoppers at retail locations on Tuesday were up by 1.4% on last year, thanks to a rise in visits to high streets and retail parks, according to preliminary data from retailer data company MRI Software. However, compared with levels in 2019 – before the first coronavirus lockdown – footfall was down by about 30%. The subdued numbers come as retailers including John Lewis, M&S, Next, as well as Poundland and The Range did not reopen on Boxing Day. Supermarkets Aldi, Iceland, Lidl and Waitrose also remained closed. It is estimated that shoppers spent around £3.7bn this Boxing Day, 3% less than last year, according to GlobalData research for the VoucherCodes website. | darrin1471 | |

22/12/2023 15:39 | UK retail sales volumes rose by 1.3% in November compared with the prior month, boosted by heavily discounted Black Friday deals, according to official data published on Friday. The change followed zero growth in October, which was revised from a fall of 0.3%, said the Office for National Statistics. “Retail sales grew strongly in November as heavy Black Friday discounting encouraged shoppers to spend. However, with the three-month trend continuing to fall and overall sales still below pre-pandemic levels, it’s still a challenging time for retailers," said Darren Morgan, the ONS director of economic statistics. “In the latest month, household goods retailers, clothing shops and department stores all reported robust sales, with computer stores, sports equipment, toy shops and cosmetics stores particularly benefitting from the impact of their Black Friday promotions." 21/12/2023 14:05 | Downturn in UK retail sector deepens in December - CBI The downturn in the UK retail sector deepened in December following a disappointing festive period, according to a survey released on Thursday. The latest Distributive Trades Survey from the Confederation of British Industry showed that the retail sales balance fell to -32 from -11 in the year to November. This marked the eighth consecutive monthly decline. The balance for expected sales for the next month also declined, to -41 in December from -6 the month before. CBI principal economist Martin Sartorius said: "The retail sector ended 2023 on a glum note, with the ongoing downturn in sales volumes deepening during the crucial holiday trading period. Looking ahead, retailers are bracing themselves for a New Year’s chill, as sales are set to fall at an even quicker pace next month. "Strained household finances and higher interest rates continue to take a toll on consumer spending, suggesting that retailers will have to navigate a tough demand environment in the months to come.
