Britain's Marks & Spencer Targets More Regular Food Shoppers

The challenge the 139-year-old group has faced is that a lot of those shoppers then return in the new year to the likes of market leader Tesco, No. 2 Sainsbury's or the German discounters Aldi and Lidl which have driven a retail revolution in Britain.

After decades of failed reinventions, M&S has entered this festive period in a stronger position, having used savings from a rebuilt supply chain to become more competitive on price and invest in new ranges. Its shares have more than doubled this year.

M&S's grocery sales in the 12 weeks to Dec. 2 increased 12.8%, only topped by Aldi and Lidl, according to data from market researcher NIQ. Now it is targeting a bigger slice of Britain’s £229 billion grocery market.

Reshaping The Business

Ian Lance, fund manager at Redwheel, M&S's second biggest investor, said management's drive to reshape the business was paying off, and an effort to retain Christmas shoppers could further boost market share and revenue.

"A big opportunity for M&S’s food business is to convert the occasional shoppers, such as those who use them at Christmas, to more regular shoppers that use them all year round," he said.

Last year, M&S CEO Stuart Machin set a five-year target to increase its share of the UK grocery market by 1%.

It held a 3.4% share in the latest 12-week period, according to NIQ. But that typically hits 5% at the start of December and around 10% in the final days before Christmas.

MORRISONS struggling under it's debt burden as intererest rates have increased...

Although interest rates are set to fall in the US they may not have peaked in the UK private equity have borrowed too much which could be a mistake.

Furthermore if sales slip further they could be heading for trouble.

TESCO and MARKS been increasing sales are so are ALDI and LIDL Morrisons will struggle to increase sales imo and cutting prices may not increase sales to make up for margin loss.

I would be interested to hear other readers views on this topic?

The new store formats are just amazing, attracting so many more customers of all ages.
Not difficult to see why MKS are doing so well

In my opinion M&S is big enough to stand on its own and takeovers of large UK retail have been unsuccessful. Walmart bought Asda and sold it. Walgreens bought Boots and have put it up for sale.

Sales at M&S Llandudno are interesting as normally when you open a new store you get a boost in sales. The corresponding LFL sales for the following year fall short of the opening quarter.

The opening of new large stores will distort LFL sales. Will the new Lakeside store be additional revenue or LFL vs the old Lakeside store?

Johnwise - I echo your post, I live in Llandudno and if this is happening across the UK M&S will do very well, I've noticed in the last 6 months a lot more younger people shopping for clothes even my own kids in their late 20s and 30s shop their now, at one stage they laughed at me, old mans shop!! how times are changing, The only worry will we see the real value return on the share price and Dividend from M&S before a bid comes in and spoil the return that are coming.

M&S update on what Llandudno relocation has done for its sales

The retailer made the move from its main site on Mostyn Street in March 2020

Marks & Spencer has given North Wales Live new data on the success of its Llandudno store since its relocation. The retailer made the move from its main site on Mostyn Street in March 2020 after 80 years at that location.

It was a controversial step for some due to the impact on the high street but the company said it was responding to the modern demands of shoppers. They took on the former Debenhams store on Parc Llandudno - increasing their food offer compared to that in the previous Mostyn Street shop.

A year ago they revealed that sales had boomed in the first few month of trading - up over 30% on clothing and more than 70% on food.

This was not a flash in the pan as the latest set of stats show another increase compared to last year. They said annual sales to date were up 13% on those already buoyant figures from 2022 as they head into their busiest period of the year.

M&S said the Llandudno store has provided a significant investment in the local economy including last year bringing on 50 new permanent jobs. They said it is part of the retailer’s plan to invest around £480 million in its store rotation programme, creating over 3,400 new jobs UK-wide.

George Lees, store manager at M&S Llandudno, said: “Looking at these new trading figures, it’s heartening to see over the last year that we’ve kept attracting new customers to shop with us, as well many of our regulars shopping with us even more than before.

"We’ve had a phenomenal reaction from customers ever since we opened our doors last year. For our Christmas peak season, we ramp up our store team to around two hundred fantastic colleagues – all working hard to create a truly festive shopping experience.

"Relocating to Parc Llandudno last year allowed us to create a fresh-market-style foodhall - our 4ft cheese barge is a definite hit with locals. Our free parking, longer opening hours and bigger clothing and home section have also proved extremely popular.”

House of Fraser, Flannels and Sports Direct are fake sales.
I did walk down my local high street on Thursday and two clothing retailers had sales on.
I think it was River Island and New Look but don't quote me on that.

That’s what the share price says - but maybe it will all be in the share price by then. Retail stocks have a habit of peaking with the January trading updates.

M&S should exit the delivery deal with Ocado.
It's dragging their brilliant upturn down.
They should have their own M&S delivery Vans on the road, similar to Waitrose
