05/8/2019 07:58 | The reason the £ keeps falling is because British people keep buying more foreign goods than foreigners buy from us. Brexit is just accentuating a problem which has been growing for years but has been treated like the elephant in the room that nobody mentions. | willoicc
05/8/2019 07:13 | Holidaymakers may take a pounding, but we shouldn’t be too worried about the collapse of the pound Patrick Freel 4 Aug 2019 8:56PM I'm selling our house in Europe (yes I have one), the pound/euro exchange rate drop will help me pay off my mortgage in the UK. Europe thus loses and the UK wins, it's not all gloom and doom, especially as all the money I earned in the UK and used to spend in Europe will now be spent in the UK. Tor Hansen 4 Aug 2019 8:52PM Just raise the artificially low interest rate, and the pound will regain its value. Flag45LikeReply Neil Whelan 4 Aug 2019 9:01PM Great point. And rewards savers rather than spenders. Semper fidelis 4 Aug 2019 9:06PM There has been no ‘run on the pound’ and no collapse in the value of sterling, no doubt much to the chagrin of those who hate Great Britain regaining its independence and would dearly love such an outcome in order to derail Brexit. On a wider historical note the value of sterling against the dollar has been falling throughout the 20th century. A phenomenon that predates British entry into the Common Market, EEC, EU. Flag39LikeReply Nautilus Shell 4 Aug 2019 9:28PM @Semper fidelis Yes, in 1953, 1 GBP bought almost 12 DEM. At the end of 1998, 1 GBP bought fewer than 3 DEM. At the start of 1999, 1 GBP bought about 1.41 EUR Mid Jun 2016, 1 GBP bought 1.26 EUR. At the moment, 1 GBP buys 1.09 EUR. You're quite right. The fall in the value of the pound does indeed predate the UK's entry into the EEC/EU. And its decline seems to continue inexorably. Unfortunately. | xxxxxy
05/8/2019 06:55 | Asian markets down sharply. And ftse futures showing fall too. Another drop likely. Reason: trade war China v US. | m4rtinu

05/8/2019 00:49 | and the Brexiteers let him in. Enjoy the ride! | weidner
05/8/2019 00:47 | andycapp1: if the EU want a border in Ireland, let them build it and staff it. Not our problem as maxk said earlier and JRM yonks ago. Desperate tactic to stop brexit that won't work. | cheshire pete
05/8/2019 00:40 | Agree they are several steps ahead grahamite2. Perhaps his opting out of the leadership contest in '16 was far sighted. The EU won't do anything until they see what happens in HofC and if there's a VONC. If the Govt.is brought down and Boris calls the election after we've left, then the EU will have something to think about. Do they start talking before the election or wait until after Boris, helped by the Brexit Party, has won. EU probably don't realise it yet, but things are starting to move our way. | cheshire pete
05/8/2019 00:00 | There's an awful lot of people don't trust anything any Conservative says. This is the legacy of the foul old hag. But I think the signs are that Boris and Cummings and the rest are carrying out a brilliant campaign to neutralize the remoaner extremists. | grahamite2
04/8/2019 23:55 | btw, where's IDS? | maxk
04/8/2019 23:48 | I wouldnt trust him as far as I could throw him graham. We need Nigel to hold his feet to the fire, otherwise he will wobble...no doubt. | maxk
04/8/2019 23:43 | Good cartoon Max but you missed out the headline: Boris Johnson pledges hospital upgrades in Leave-voting seats as he attempts to see off Brexit Party threat One grows just a bit worried about his sincerity. If he thinks he can get away with some kind of BRINO by chucking a few bob at the NHS he's got another think coming. | grahamite2

04/8/2019 23:19 | Minerve is right you could make the world a better place by hanging a few people but I'm not sure two is enough. Obviously hanging Dominic Grieve and Oliver Letwin would be a good start, though. | grahamite2
04/8/2019 22:54 | Why do you keep going on about the Oirish border? It's the €U's problem, not ours! | maxk
