10/9/2024 09:39 | Goldman Sachs have predicted that Rachel Reeves could hike taxes by up to £20bn per year in next month’s budget. In a new research note this morning, Goldman analyst James Moberly explains that the Labour government faces “a challenging fiscal outlook”. That, he says, is because the UK faces “significant in-year spending pressures” in the current financial year, and because planned spending growth in future years “looks too low”. This indicates that spending may need to be around £25bn a year higher than budgeted for in Labour’s manifesto by the end of the Parliament, Moberly has calculated. And that, he tells Goldman’s clients today, means increases in taxation are also likely to be required – worth “at least” £15-20bn per year. Moberly explains: Given that the Chancellor is likely to want to leave a somewhat larger margin of headroom than the Conservatives did in recent fiscal events, we expect that the government will aim to raise at least £15-20bn per year in additional receipts on top of the tax increases announced in the manifesto. Moberly adds that the government could benefit if the Bank of England slows the pace of its bond sale programme (quantitative tightening, or QT) this month. Lower losses from QT could free up billions of pounds of fiscal space against the debt target. Alternatively, Reeves could reduce the effect of the losses on the public finances by around £15bn by changing the debt rule to target headline rather than underlying net debt, he suggests. | jordaggy
10/9/2024 09:30 | The cruse on our short list scruff is with Seabourn, 2 weeks in the Caribbean, 600 max passengers, sit where you like in 8 restaurants to chose from with superb food and drink. Quite like the idea of unpacking once and seeing a different place every day. Being a small ship, most port stays are right up close, so none of your queuing like sheep. I would never suffer one of those big ships. | mikemichael2
10/9/2024 08:41 | scruff we arrive in life where we arrive, the route is not necessarily the chosen one. I make no claims, can't be bothered to make it up, nobody would believe the story anyway. Off to Gloucestershire now to meet up with another couple of posters, one from Bolton and the other on a break from Genevaland. Have a good day 🙂 | aceuk
10/9/2024 08:33 | scruff1 Post 397049 He has a point though Ace. Destitution and your struggle claiming benefits doesnt seem to fit easily with involvement in the stock market. I presume the "He has a point" is in reference to my comment. Aceuk has been filtered for ages so it was surprising to read other peoples comments here about some misfortune of his and how he is now reliant on welfare. Despite him claiming to be a Financial big hitter several years ago during the pandemic years!!!!! In similar fashion I havent bothered reading anything careful has said in years so the new filter function that completely hides filtered posters means sometimes the conversations here seem disjointed. I've also been busy working out how to keep my money from Rachel Reeves prying eyes so havent commented as much as usual. | geckotheglorious

10/9/2024 08:01 | Suspected US Drone Strike Targeted Iraq’ Wasit Governorate Support SouthFront On September 9, local sources reported a suspected US drone strike in the Wasit Governorate of Iraq. Following the attack, a column of smoke was seen near the headquarters of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in al-Suwaira area north of Wasit Governorate. However, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior denied the airstrikes. The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced, “Some social media channels published news about an airstrike between al-Suwira and al-Azizia areas. While we deny these reports, but as preliminary information about this incident, we emphasize that the incident was a fire in some grass in the area, which led to the burning of some of the ammunition in that area.” While the Iraqi Ministry of Interior has denied this attack, local sources observed an American MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone over the area moments before the alleged fire. This increases the possibility of an airstrike. Nonetheless, this is not the first time that Iraqi officials’ claims are false. In the past, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior had denied some American airstrikes against the PMU headquarters, but later it became clear that the airstrikes had taken place and the PMU members were killed. It is worth mentioning that on July 30, the US army carried out a strike in the central province of Babil. Later, the PMF announced in a statement that four of its members were killed in the blast and several others were wounded. The US claimed that this attack targeted fighters who were preparing to launch a suicide drone attack that posed a threat to U.S. forces and its allies. The Iraqi groups began launching attacks against U.S. bases in Iraq and neighboring Syria as well as against targets in Israel last October in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and Washington’s unwavering support for it. Israel has not openly responded to the Iraqi groups attacks yet. Nevertheless, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, after the start of the war in Gaza. Some believe that since Israel refrains from making public and noisy attacks on Iraq like what is happening in Syria; the US army targets Iraqi groups on behalf of Israel.
