In terms of City talent, those involved in pure share trading are near the bottom of the front office pile. The business itself has severally lost money for various banks and some just don’t bother with it. Very little profit in it.

The swaps market is a different thing entirely as that leads to much more complex products and the requirement for talent. Losing large parts of the Euro swap market will be interesting since this product goes hand in hand with other products which may still easily reside in London. Once the two products are separated, it becomes a mess and end-users will have something to say about this in the fullness of time.

Innovation in European financial centres is a fraction of what goes on in the City, and I see little chance of that changing. BaFin and MiFid II apply a noose at every turn. Plus the fact that European financial workers have nothing more than a civil service mentality.

While the EU stamps its feet, the City will be devising workarounds and alternative products in whichever way it feels it needs to.

The fun will start when Europe realises it has a banking industry which is so weak it needs the partnership of London in syndication efforts in many deals. The markets will determine much of this after the politicians have run out of puff.

Every time the EU tries to make life difficult for us all we have to do is tweak things to give us an advantage going forward, even better if it is done cleverly in a way that outmanoeuvres them and which their bureaucracy and need for approval of 27 will not be able to counter.

Hotel quarantine booking system crashes shortly after being launched

People attempting to book rooms for first two days of quarantine were also unable to do so

The Government's online booking system for Britons to reserve hotel quarantine rooms crashed on the day of its launch.

The system went live early on Thursday afternoon, but a message soon appeared to say that work was being carried out on it.

The message read: "Sorry for the inconvenience but we're performing some maintenance at the moment. It is expected that the site will be available again by 3pm."

Even before the announcement, people going onto the system in an attempt to book rooms had been unable to do so for the first two days of quarantine.

Voters need to give the tories a SEVERE kicking at the local elections (if they allow one). This Coronovirus Act has made em power crazed and arrogant. The electorate need to show em whose really the boss whilst they are still able. Reform UK if available if not Raving Loonies (the ones who admit it)etc
