Shares in British gambling companies such as Ladbrokes and William Hill rose on Wednesday, with traders citing relief that the British budget did not unveil any strict, new taxes on the sector.

"No tax hikes, so positive for the sector," said Securequity sales trader Jawaid Afsar.

Ladbrokes' shares rose as much as 8.8 percent before settling back to stand 4.9 percent higher by 1400 GMT.

William Hill's shares rose 3.3 percent while shares in Paddy Power Betfair also advanced 1.7 percent.

On the basis that the forthcoming budget will have more bad news (higher taxes) on slot machines etc. in bookies..........

Cheltenham results watching is always fun at this time of year. With Mullins' yard not looking in such good form as last year, the festival may be a much better one for the bookies.

LAD Ladbrokes

They say Bookies are defensive stocks so just right at the moment. I hold LAD and was very convinced with last statement, it seems they are gearing the online side up substantially and should benefit from the Euros Football this summer.

SP moved off bottom trendline yesterday within the uptrend channel. Im looking for a breakout of the channel and the former top initially at 140p or abouts, then after the summer a rise to 170p and above.

P/E forecast to fall from 22 this year to 16 year 2017, rather cheap IMO.

Indeed - cannot see it failing to get approval.

The deal will mean that LADS will be around in the final shake up with a small number of big winners in the gaming sector.

HILLS need to partner up and soon. They may even be looking at AYA but I suspect PTEC will get their first.

888 are not long for this world. They are simply not big enough and losing the race for BWIN to GVC was a disaster really.

I can see GVC taking our 888 next but they will need a couple of years to bed BPTY into the family

Q4 trading shows acceleration in the recovery and the benefits of increased marketing spend. This stock still has substantial recovery potential, especially if the Coral deal is approved.

LADS continues to perform very well in such a soggy market. Price now comfortably though 123p resistance level. Recovery only at early stages following IT debacle under previous CEO. Even like the TV ads :)

Hills will need to react.

The future is a small number of massive gaming companies that are global and globally regulated.

Time to pick the winners.
