AN Irish diamond exploration company believes parts of Fermanagh, in particular Brookeborough, may contain hidden diamonds and is seeking a licence to carry out searches in the area.
Karelian, which is currently conducting an extensive diamond exploration programme in Finland, has moved its attention to Fermanagh and Tyrone.
In documents lodged with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council by the Department for the Economy, Karelian explained that it wishes to focus on an area that it believes “may have diamondiferous potential and in which the historic Brookborough diamond is reported to have been discovered.”
Two reports from the Journal of the Royal Geological Society of Ireland refer to the 1816 discovery of the Brookeborough diamond in the Colebrooke River. The stone was presented to Lady Brooke and inspected by several jewellers in Dublin, who confirmed the stone to be a diamond.
The company’s website states that its objective is to make “substantial returns for shareholders” through the discovery and development of economic diamond deposits in the Finnish sector.
Now the Department for the Economy says it has received an application from the company in respect of mineral prospecting rights and that consideration is currently being given to the issue of one licence for six years for much of eastern Fermanagh and south Tyrone including all of Brookeborough and Fivemiletown, half of Tempo and the edge of Maguiresbridge. It includes Clabby Forest, Teiges Mountain and Slieve Beagh.
The map and some further details on the work programme which if permitted would include “low impact exploration sample collection” are on display at Enniskillen Townhall.
In papers submitted to the Council the Department for the Economy stated that “it is important that we identify our available natural resources as minerals are essential to support sustainable economic growth and quality of life.”
In the UK trade in minerals and minerals based products makes up over 20 per cent of total trade, with exports of £66 billion and imports of £85 billion in 2014, according to the documents.
“The Department recognises the need to make the best use of our mineral resources while also minimising the impacts on the environment and society,” it reads.
A minerals prospecting licence, which the Department says is not mining, permits a range of measures, including: reviews, geological surveys, assessments, a geochemical survey, a geophysical survey, trenching, pitting, rock sampling, drilling, chemical analysis and laboratory studies.
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Council’s Regeneration and Community Committee, councillors were united in opposing the request from Karelian.
“The information we have been given is not enough, we don’t know exactly what they are proposing,” said Sinn Fein’s John Feely. “There’s no one accountable here, it’s just the civil service.”
“I would be very suspicious of this application,” said Sinn Fein’s Sheamus Greene. “There’s no professionalism in this whatsoever, it’s a complete shambles of an amateur document.”
“I too would be totally opposed at something like this going ahead in any townland,” said Independent Councillor Bernice Swift.
“Central government appears to be holding all the cards,” said Independent Councillor Josephine Deehan.
“I’ve heard nothing that would make me respond positively,” said Sinn Fein’s Brian McCaffrey:
“I too have concerns,” added SDLP Councillor Patricia Rogers.
Green Party Deputy leader Tanya Jones, who watched Tuesday night’s meeting at Enniskillen Townhall from the public gallery, said she is “concernedR21; about the development.
Speaking to this newspaper after the meeting, Ms Jones said: “We do not even know which base metals will be sought, or which areas within that vast region will be targeted, so we have no way of knowing what the potential impacts could be to groundwater, rivers streams and loughs, air quality, livestock, wildlife and habitats and to human health.”Ms. Jones welcomed the comments in the Council Chamber, particularity around “the insufficient information provided, the lack of accountability, the failure to consult and listen to local communities, the potential for serious damage and the need for a strategic review of the whole licensing regime.”
“Councillors pointed out the danger which mineral prospecting could pose to the growing tourism sector in areas such as Slieve Beagh and the consternation which has already been caused by goldmining operations in the north of the Council area. No one spoke in favour of the Department’s proposals,” she said.
A full response from the Council is to be “finalisedR21; at the Environmental Services Committee meeting on November 8.

Its a bit like a Hoodless Brennan job if anyone remembers them ring the clients with all the spiel clients buy on a T20 and then when it's time to cough up and the share price has gone down they are forced sellers back to Beaufort who then sell the shares at the quoted bid price back to the market .In effect a lot of the 179 million placed shares are ending up back at the market makers with no homes to go to .The solution is Prof needs to get an investor on board to take the shares out of Beaufort and the market and promote and pump up the company as a very much going concern so start earning your money prof get on with and restore some shareholder value the curgent situation is unacceptable.

The weakness in the price and the fact there are shares offered in size is consistent with Beaufort still having millions on the books .Beaufort will be selling shares to their clients meanwhile the market makers will be taking all these sells without being able to sell them on so in effect we have 2 overhangs one at Beaufort the other at the mms hence the severely low share price .This should now be addressed as a priority by the BOD to start rewarding the loyal shareholders imo.

The stock is certainly not oversold, as RBonnier has previously stated, the limits are weighed heavily to the buy side! This weakness in price is months ongoing now, so I doubt they are placing shares being forward sold as we would have had a fundraising RNS ages ago if that were the case. It's possible that Beaufort have shed loads, but what was the price at the last fundraising? There are times when you feel any overhang has gone and the share price starts reacting to buys, then there are times like now, when over 3million buys have no effect whatsoever on the price! There is a reason for this, but whether it is Market manipulation for some reason, I couldn't say.

Thanks for confirming that stevehoops that leaves us with 3 possibilities
1 The market makers are selling shares they havnt got.
2 There is a placing
3 Beaufort still have millions on the books .
None of these seems very likely anyone got any other ideas .

Agreed with Goldeneye here a very interesting month leading up to the AGM I donr know who is selling but there is an overhang that won't clear is Mr Osborne still a firm holder ? Stevehoops won't be selling or prof that leaves Alan with a notifiable holding believe me you can buy a lot at 0.47 so a large line of stock has come to the market and it won't be a placing that leaves few alternatives.

Ever wonder why the Fermanagh license now? It's not as if the prof has just learned of the Brookeborough diamond in Fermanagh a few weeks ago. Looks like a strategic move to me and it coincides with the delistings. Perhaps an interesting month ahead!

Wonder if new company for Finland about to be created by Rio and KDR. A company to develop Lahtojoki, Seitapera, Riihivaara and our new rare green diamond source. Add it all together and you have a tasty diamond province for RTZ.

I can still buy at .46 something going on, but small sells keep pushing it down. Buys have little effect.

That's a nice trade and at a great price. Nearly 2.5m at 0.49. Wonder is Rio deal close to being triggered? Don't underestimate the significance of the rare diamond discovery and how important it is.

What really excites me is that coloured diamonds are so rare. We are close to the kimberlite source of the diamond found in January which was green. Alrosa mine across the border produces one of the highest percentages of coloured diamonds. Colored diamonds, which sell for many times more than similar-sized white stones, have been setting records recently. Christie’s sold the 14.62 carat ‘‘Oppenheimer Blue’’ for $58 million last year, while Sotheby’s auctioned the 59.6 carat ‘‘Pink Star’’ for $71 million in April, a record auction price for any gem. In terms of rough, or uncut, diamonds.

Here's a little clue guys. Notice the similarities
A large collection (717 samples) of diamonds from the V. Grib deposit, discovered in 1996 in the Verhotinskoe field of the Arkhangelsk kimberlite province, was studied. The diamond crystals are characterized by high transparency and preservation. The collection consists of complete crystals (71%), chipped and damaged crystals (preservation > 50%; 14%), and fragments (preservation < 50%; 15%). Resorption is generally moderate resulting in a dominance of octahedral and mixed octahedral-dodecahedral shapes. Moderate resorption points to rapid ascent of the transporting kimberlite magma. A characteristic feature of V. Grib is a large number of green diamonds. This may relate to the close proximity of radioactive deposits. Microscopic green surface spots have no cathodoluminescence. The internal diamond morphology was studied by UV- and cathodoluminescence. The main typomorphic feature of diamond crystals from the V. Grib pipe is a high percentage of crystals without UV-luminescence. Presence of sectorial growth was also identified by luminescence. Analysis of mineral inclusions, carbon isotopic composition, nitrogen content and nitrogen aggregation state provided important genetic information. Peridotitic inclusions (olivine, chromian spinel and pyrope) predominate, sulfides are almost completely absent. The carbon isotopic composition of the host diamonds is typical for peridotitic diamonds worldwide. IR-spectroscopy suggests the presence of two diamond populations with low and high nitrogen concentrations. Three sub-populations may be identified based on a combination of morphology, nitrogen and hydrogen defects. Residence temperatures (T Nitrogen), based on a mantle residence time of 3 Ga, fall between 1050 and 1170 °C. Diamond crystallization in V. Grib occurred in multiple stages. This is documented through luminescence patterns, data on nitrogen concentration and aggregation state, and the presence of "diamond-in-diamond" inclusions.

My guess is that if KDR were selling, and RTZ were playing games, Alrosa want to bid - whereupon RTZ might want to bid too...

But DYOR, I have no special information

RBonnier....re post 10016...why not just reverse into CGNR. Which would be the most asset rich Company if there was such a takeover? Would the existing shareholders in CGNR accept an all paper offer, especially after recent events? At what price would Rio get our assets for in Finland. 100% premium on today's price would still leave us at under a penny! The extension to the deal with Rio was until 2020 I seem to recall? Nothing has happened under that agreement to trigger anything further going forward. Do you think KDR could get funding capital to run the Company for another 30 months, or do you think Rio might just wait and pick up the pieces for nothing!!

It all fell into place for me after the events of last week .With the price of gold set to rise over the next few years this looks like perfect timing for the development of the Gold Mine I intend to increase my holding to 1 million this really could make investors very wealthy .
