I had lunch on Friday in the city with a few old colleagues and clients of mine. One of them has a not insignificant midcap hedge fund. I told him I was long ITV and he laughed and said they’d been shorting it last week. I asked why and he said purely that they hate the UK (economy). Despite the success of ITVx and the studios business , ITV is still traded (by some) as a linear TV play. That makes it an interest rate sensitive (advertising), and if you hate the UK economy , you would hate ITV. I don’t agree clearly (with the investment case), but it’s hard to be positive on UK plc right now… Anyway , enjoy tomorrow all. |
Have a good Christmas one and all. See you in the New Year. |
I don't think Idiot is shorting at all, he's a fantasist. |
Well, for better or for worse I've used todays fake low volume rise in the markets...and ITV (rising on buy back bots in the absence of sellers today) to re-short again having covered at slightly lower levels.(A 50% hedge against my investment here)
I just cannot accept that ITV ad revenues wont be impacted early in 2025 by that terrible budget.
Without this Labour government the share price would be still be mid / high 80's in my opinion but a lot has changed over the past few months.
Regardless of positions I want to wish everybody here a very Happy Christmas. |
matthewr1...some good, fair, and balanced posts from you which are much appreciated. Roll on January! |
Loginname, thanks for the link mate. Regarding the buy back shares that are currently held in treasury, ITV have said in the RNS that they intend to cancel the purchased shares. I agree that it would make good sense to hold some for future employee share plans.
Happy Christmas everyone. |
Added 25,653 shares this morning.
Anyone else before the 12:30 close?!
Happy Xmas all |
Nige, some ideas here.
Interesting to see employee share plan schemes mentioned a few times - as “the Company holds 120,479,277 of its ordinary shares in treasury” - which I think are earmarked for future employee plan issue to save money creating new shares.
Could this also be a small inroad to a defence in anticipation of something in the near future? |
"I spoke to an old colleague of mine ex Logica PLC whose son works for a City investment bank who believe ITV are being prepared for anything hostile."
I'm not sure what the ITV BOD could do to defend itself, any thoughts on this? |
I wonder with AIM being closed today will any high rollers bung a few quid into ITV on bid chance? |
Itv attempted to acquire All3media back in 2023. The opposite might be considered unwelcome |
There are signs that all the talk is more than rumour. I spoke to an old colleague of mine ex Logica PLC whose son works for a City investment bank who believe ITV are being prepared for anything hostile. Such info generally is out weeks before a bid.
He told me that the private equity CVC Capital are active to getting support for a bid, but that is common knowledge, however acquirers also named in the reports included KKR-backed Mediawan and All3Media, owned by Redbird Capital Partners.
The chances that something big is happening with all these names in the frame is now odds on, my hope is we see some action in 2025 with hopes no bad news occurs in the Ukraine or Middle East. |
Come on Santa...
Give us poor suffering ITV shareholders at least a little Xmas gift this year...
How about another of those little spikes like last Friday ?
(Buy back bot of 12000 shares is currently working away on 72.2p bid...It needs waking up...) |
Although they wouldn't then be taking over a business with a big pile of cash if it's all been spent on buy backs |
I assume any takeover would probably end when the share buyback is more or less complete (if the price remains the same per share then with less shares they get the company cheaper)... |
Exactly that bountybar! We’re getting paid to wait! |
People expecting this to open at £1.50 don’t seem to understand it’s Xmas week.
All the recent articles clearly state talks are at an early stage.
Go and have a mince pie, The Grinch is on ITV at 14:50 - it’s the story of a bitter short seller who tries to ruin Xmas. |
The bid is in for DLG, now I just need the same for ITV and SPI to complete the set! I'm expecting to have to wait a while however. |
All these fantasy bid rumours are just that.
It's to deter shorters from shorting knowing that current ITV revenues will be under pressure heading into H1 2025.....
.....because there is absolutely no chance in the world of short-term ad revenues surprising to the upside and a huge chance of downside risks as UK PLC adjust to higher NI contributions + minimum wage rise beginning in April...
I think even studios will come under pressure into early next year..
H1 2025 will see the UK enter a mild recession IMO.
(Even Santa sees this hence no Xmas rally this year) |

Assura...
Pretty much rubbish at the moment I guess which is to be expected with so much negative market sentiment currently towards inflation and interest rates.
I'm confident there though having done my research. Just a patience thing now
(Apologies for O/T to everyone else) |
All these rumours and speculation and they open down 🙄 |
Hi cyber, I understand what you're saying, I was working on a tier 1 patent for a chip-scale atomic clock (CSAC) a technological innovation so important that real-world applications and even museum-level technologies needed it. Now, I had the drawings, the patent, and everything done so I could go to the patent office to file the next day. However, the day I was going there my dog got hold of it all and ripped it up. I lost everything!!! |
