IQE have 'perfected' SOI technology as far back as 2011- just do a simple search for a plethora of information, its just simply 'another way of doing things', albeit far more complex.

this is an old video but the link is useful if you want to know the services and the types of epitaxy that IQE does

world facing and TOF technology is one of our CEO's most favourite talking points at AGM's ;-)

As far as STMicro is concerned - they are now a VERY IMPORTANT partner for IQE both in the photonics division in the ViDAP alliance which also includes Philips but also as the main manufacturing partner for Macom for RF Gan on Silicon base station modules and MIMO

it gets boring reposting 'history' but things are now coming together so if you haven't worked out how important the ViDAP alliance is, have another decko- if you cant 'get it' then you never will ;-)

I expect to be back with some great newsflow........soon

Maxwells Demon do you mind writing a few short sentences for us less smart on what that means for IQE. Seems highly poaitive.

What does Silicon on Insulator mean with regards to IQE? I am confused by the terminology. Is this something IQE produces. I have read all Sweenoids posts and have not seen it referred to as silicon on insulator? Could you confirm this is what IQE produces as "compound semiconductor wafer"?

In terms of VCSEL wafer content, a world facing camera is likely to be more significant than the Face ID system. A rear facing 3D camera with any decent range will probably be based on (short pulse) Time of Flight (ToF)

From the recent IQE results:

-- Potential for strong growth in 2019 and beyond

-- Increasing VCSEL adoption for 3D sensing expected to accelerate
across multiple smartphone OEMs, introduction of world facing 3D
technology, and first deployment of LIDAR and several other high
volume sensing applications

From Bloomberg:

Apple Inc. is working on a rear-facing 3-D sensor system for the iPhone in 2019, another step toward turning the handset into a leading augmented-reality device, according to people familiar with the plan...............

.........Apple added a software tool called ARKit this year that made it easier for developers to make apps for the iPhone using AR. The tool is good at identifying flat surfaces and placing virtual objects or images on them. But it struggles with vertical planes, such as walls, doors or windows, and lacks accurate depth perception, which makes it harder for digital images to interact with real things. So if a digital tiger walks behind a real chair, the chair is still displayed behind the animal, destroying the illusion. A rear-facing 3-D sensor would help remedy that.

AR on the iPhone X
The iPhone X uses its front-facing 3-D sensor for Face ID, a facial-recognition system that replaced the fingerprint sensor used in earlier models to unlock the handset. Production problems with the sensor array initially slowed manufacturing of the flagship smartphone, partly because the components must be assembled to a very high degree of accuracy...........

.............Apple’s choice of Grenoble for its labs, where ST has long headquartered its image-sensor team, seems hardly coincidental.

Cambou suspects that ST could be using Silicon on insulator (SOI)-based wafers for the new SPAD 3D imagers. He said, “This is the way people have been doing BSI in the Grésivaudan valley (in Crolles…) for a long time.”...................

Fancy getting in before the masses on the 4th industrial revolution in IOT and data security before GDPR next month.Another knockout I.T stock that just about to explode.I'm not ramping but only tipping yourselves on this board as I was in IQE at the 16p days and sold out prematurely.Take a look at TERN and I want anyone that's intereted to really research it over if you get time.Don't be late to the party and just remember this is only for this board.I apologise if off topic but it's a fantastic stock pick and can make you significant gains if you can get in early.Once in a life time stock and loads of research to uncover on the TERN BBGood luck :)

If this goes below the 85 gap then that becomes resistance - 100p will be hard to crack ie round numbers but it usually takes 3 knocks at the door - it's had 1 so far

Flashmob, I'd agree with your summary. Over on iii there are people talking about fair value being 80p or less, which is ludicrous unless you consider a practically stagnant growth outlook for this company, which would be far from justified.

Its at the bottom of its 'fair value' range at the moment, which I understand considering the rough ride recently with 1) no news, barring the results which explained, but didn't solidify the new growth catalysts 2) the tragic news of phil's death 3) the news from Taiwan sc's which implies iPhone x selling poorly.

Apple news impacts iqe disproportionately with respect to apple's importance to iqe's wider opportunity. We know this.

The bull case for iqe is strong, but it'll take longer to manifest than many would like, and some investors may lose patience along the way.

My target is 160p - 175p by year end, considering 'expected' progress. Any given rns or macro news could change that target for better or worse.

Here is an update from my earlier post from Forbes:

APR 20, 2018 @ 07:02 PM

..........Whereas all previous leaks claimed Apple would launch an iPhone X-inspired entry-level model at $799, Kuo states Apple has been able to produce it for just $550. This would be a stunning breakthrough. The new model in question not only carries the same core design as the iPhone X, but increases the screen size to 6.1-inches and features Face ID facial recognition............

Just come out of the Global Investor show, Matt Earl spoke of nothing new and certainly with no conviction so we can forget him (if you haven't already)

My take on IQE is that they do need to improve their customer relations and I don't think it's the boom story that's been touted. But they have very good products that a hugely growing market. They need to keep working hard in a competitive market and ensure they retain their leading position. At present I think they are trading at the bottom of a fair valuation range of 110 - 130 but expect upwards movement to 160 by the end of the year.

Apple news / rumours will always affect this stock to some extent but there's a lot more too it than that.

It would be good to get confirmation about the new cheaper iPhones. Also interesting to see the sensors are perceived as costing $50-70 per phone. But as ever, we are left in a vacuum of speculation.

Thanks Someuwin- I think that article was obviously the source of madfoetus’s comment.
Everyone knows that the X will be ‘terminated217; but few mention it’s actually going to be replaced ;-) and likely at a lower price. I predict that there will be clarity very soon on the market position of the 3D sensor supply.

Agreed MF, since I have a long term view and my view and research is the only thing that I care about, I remain very optimistic, some will call me Panglossian here, don’t care, SP’s often bare no relevance to what’s actually happening - both up and down. Later, probably late Monday afternoon:-)

Dave,I am very long on IQE: it is near 20% of my speculative portfolio and I really want it to do well. But we cannot be too Panglossian about things. It may be that fear about this are behind the orders for new machines, which I recall sheeps felt were at the lower end of expectations.

Apple's iPhone X is likely to be discontinued this year if earnings from one of the company's top suppliers is anything to go by, according to an analyst.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, or TSMC , the world's largest semiconductor foundry company, revised its full-year revenue target to the low end of its forecast . Shares in the company closed 6.3 percent lower on Friday.
One of the biggest concerns for Neil Campling, the co-head of the global thematic group focusing on technology at Mirabaud Securities, is the oversupply of chips. This "has never been higher," according to Campling's note to clients Thursday. His firm has tracked inventory data at TSMC for over a decade.

The chipmaker's current situation could give investors concerns over AMS , Apple's key supplier of 3-D sensing technology in the iPhone X. The 3-D sensors are key for the Face ID feature that lets you unlock the device by looking at it.
TSMC's record inventory levels are due to Apple not buying components for any future iPhone X models, suggesting the device will be killed off this year, Campling said.

"With the declines in iPhone X orders and the inventory issue at TSMC at record highs, which basically reflect a need to burn off inventory. Why? Because the iPhone X is dead," Campling wrote in his note...

MF- evidence please of your purported rumours

Please provide credible links to the supposition that AMS has inventory issues, We await your reply, I don’t need all the rumours about soft iPhone X sales as that is frankly irrelevant, when 3 flavours of iPhone all with 3D sensing are about to go into manufacture, just give us the AMS stuff please
