01/2/2017 09:33 | Interesting comment around 53 minutes into the Macom call, asked about GaN supply and if out sourced. Answer: some in house, but chomping at the bit to announce a partner supply agreement. "Within spitting distance". Hopefully this is IQE.... | poombear
01/2/2017 09:28 | Here endeth today's lecture. | yump
01/2/2017 08:53 | Good start. | someuwin
01/2/2017 08:20 | yep GAN coming along nicely ,it's going to get established and be a big winner for us BUT FOR NOW , I think the key revenue driver is photonics and especially metro, data centres , cloud connectivity and 100G and beyond as buzz light year would have to say these days - these are MASSSIVE earners for us Last night Macom referee to the HYPER-DRIVE conditions for those businesses especially metro and data centres Olaro in their CC stated that they were SOLD-OUT in their 100G business - they simply cannot produce enough product to satisfy the INSATIABLE demands especially from China Apple commentary was also very positive and ahead of expectations, that's great for our wireless business, as I have already stated increased complexity and innovation plays to our strengths , I think 2017 will be the year when we really see some great new innovation ( more CSneeded :-)) .Mobike World Congress later this month will see the Android community preview their new smartphones for later this year, I M hopeful that Huawei, Meizu and Samsung drive innovation , we shall see 2017 shaping up nicely for us- if our major customers are doing gang- buster business that must mean rewards down the line S | sweenoid
01/2/2017 07:49 | MACOM's Q1 results last night slightly beat expectations: More importantly, it seems like GaN is progressing well and expectations are getting bigger and bigger: "With that, let's move over to GaN. This quarter, we delivered on orders for initial production builds that I previously highlighted at two major customers. It still early yet, but we're making solid progress, turning their boards for customer qualifications and field trials. I'd like to highlight two new developments, two leading indicators that were on the right track. First: one of those customers has asked us to negotiate a global purchase agreement for base station business, which they only require of strategic vendors that they plan to ramp through significant share of wallet. Second: one of them has now asked us to bid on a 900 megahertz platform in addition to the earlier 1.8 gigahertz and 3.5 gigahertz programs. Subtle but very important is the fact that when customers consider new sources for legacy narrowband programs, where LDMOS has thrived, they do so with a major shift in suppliers in mind and with the intention of qualifying that GaN supplier for all frequency bands. This significantly improves our SAM model. We now believe that GaN adoption will end up widespread at all frequency bands simultaneously, which would provide us access to the full $1 billion TAM and base stations. This is exactly what I saw with the adoption of LDMOS many years ago. When the first movers adopted LDMOS technology, it triggered a domino effect. Base station OEMs know they can't be left behind with outdated power amplifier technology. I believe this domino effect can only be enabled by someone like MACOM who can deliver the benefits of GaN at the required cost structure and, more importantly, with the supply chain flexibility to support search capacity for global wireless infrastructure deployments. At this juncture, our ability to execute operationally will determine the magnitude and scope of the GaN revenue ramp over the coming quarters and years." | rivaldo

31/1/2017 10:26 | Another big trade. | someuwin
31/1/2017 09:07 | Beerbandit I can remember cheating trying to fit lines into a scattering of points when I was at Uni. and its proved a very useful skill with charts ;-) Perhaps that's how charting started. Someone did the same on a share price chart and thought 'I know, we could peddle this as science'. | yump
30/1/2017 17:43 | Busy day for earnings results tomorrow circa 9pm for IQE customers Macom and Oclaro ( Oclaro have already signalled a profit warning) as always the conference calls and outlook statements will be more interesting. Apple also report - their statement is less important, but it does influence the share price of Skyworks and other IP providers Both Apple and Samsung ..along with the other smartphone makers are in a bit of a technology 'stall' at present- not really any great advances in technology in the last 18-24 months- faster and better processor's I grant but no real new innovation , I guess VR will be the new innovation this year, either ways the more complex and innovative phones get , the better for us :-) Qorvo add to the earnings results on Wednesday, another big customer and no longer getting a discount on their wafers from IQE :-) S | sweenoid
30/1/2017 16:55 | Yep, that's chartists for you, Beerbandit. | lord gnome
30/1/2017 16:29 | Yump So your saying sometimes it'll breakout up or sometimes down or sometimes move sideways. Fascinating :-) | beerbandit
30/1/2017 15:44 | I see the chart is showing a series of pennants since August. From what I gather, pennants are always followed by a strong breakout upwards or downwards. Although sometimes they go back to just moving up and down in a restricted band, after which you can draw a new set of lines in to make a new pennant, using new tops and bottoms that fit better. Its never boring though ;-) | yump
30/1/2017 15:40 | poombear Perhaps it its successful in creating lots of jobs, in another 30 years, they'll move on to deal with other run-down areas in coal-mining, textiles, steel towns and shipbuilding. | yump
30/1/2017 14:58 | Moving up. | someuwin
30/1/2017 11:54 | Get a real sense that Government, business and academia are coming together to try and build a new industry with this, interesting to see even without IQE involvement. | poombear
30/1/2017 08:50 | I think the BBC report is a little confused, I have obtained the press release from Cardiff Uni and it's clear that this very welcome funding is aimed at the clean room at Cardiff Uni, it's related to IQE but it's more related to the UNI than the CSC or IQE although the connections are very very close :-) Can't do a link to this so I will copy the English release, perhaps the most interesting and relevant comments are from the IQE CEO about the CS business itself Sorry it's a large piece of text rather than an URL but needs must £13m EU funding boost for Compound Semiconductors Backing will help build and equip Institute’s clean room A £13m EU funding boost to help put Cardiff University’s Institute for Compound Semiconductors at the forefront of 21st Century technologies has been announced by Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford [28.01.17]. The EU funding will help build, equip and run a state-of-the-art cleanroom at the new Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS), based at Cardiff University’s Innovation Campus. ICS will turn its laboratory research into products and services by working with commercial partners to lead in developing one of the world’s key enabling technologies – Compound Semiconductors (CS). Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford said: “Investing in world leading facilities so that academia and industry can collaborate and drive forward research in this sector will be an important boost to the Welsh economy. “This EU funding will encourage high quality well-paid employment in the participating companies and the creation of spin-out companies, new start-ups as well as attracting innovative CS companies from across the UK and Europe, all adding to increased growth and prosperity in the region.” Compound Semiconductor technologies underpin the internet and have enabled new emerging megatrends such as Smart Phones, tablets, and satellite communications. CS are created by combining elements to produce materials with physical and chemical properties that have wide-ranging technological applications. Professor Colin Riordan, Vice Chancellor of Cardiff University, said: “This EU funding is a vital component in our bid to generate prosperity in South Wales through industrial innovation. By investing in high quality facilities and talented researchers, and by building long-standing commercial partnerships, Cardiff University’s Innovation System will help deliver prosperity for Wales.” Dr Drew Nelson, CEO, IQE plc, said: "The role of compound semiconductors as an enabling technology for a wide range of next generation applications from high-speed communications to autonomous vehicles, is widely acknowledged worldwide, with major initiatives underway by blue-chip organisations, academic institutions and government agencies, particularly in Asia and the USA. "In Europe, Wales is uniquely positioned with a critical mass of compound semiconductor expertise to exploit the enormous commercial opportunities that will doubtlessly be generated. Today's announcement of £13M investment by WEFO significantly adds weight and credibility to Wales becoming a global hub in this key enabling technology that will drive innovation over the coming years and decades." The funding builds on long-running work between the University, IQE, Welsh and UK Government to develop a hub of CS expertise in South Wales, and includes awards of £17.3m from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund and £12m from Welsh Government to support the development of the wider ICS facility. 28/1/2017 17:18 | Let's be honest......none of you have got a bloody clue! Even a broken clock can be right twice a day! Lol | tomyumgoong
28/1/2017 17:04 | I know there hasn't been. That's not the point I'm making. I curious as to why you didn't post a chart showing this potential for a correction back in August and particularly October ? What is special about now, that warrants a chart mentioning corrections ? You could post a chart every time any share has a similar pattern. So what's special about this one ? | yump |
