If CWU bankrupts royal mail as it appears then shareholders will be wiped out.

Todays Telegraph say Management claim that CWU is trying to bankrupt Royal Mail and hoping for Re Nationalistion.

So what re they going to do about it?

It seemed obvious from the start.
They must get tougher.

They must sack some workers, permanently.
Many companies do it, they should get on with it.

Strikes have actually cost the company £200m according the the radio this morning. Not saved them money. Think about compensation to customers etc...

I'm almost certain that IDS would be willing to sell it on for £1 and also pay down any proportional debt just to get rid of it. As I've often pondered, they could sell it to the CWU and the CWU could give it's potentially former members anything that makes them happy.

Yep. I think the best way to let it devour itself is to ring-fence it off as a totally separate entity and and just let the money claims come in once there is no more money for the employees and running costs -this way, I suspect they can circumvent Govt. approval.

Fact is RM is in a stronger financial position than before. They just got a circa 15% rise in income and now the Union have rejected the latest pay offer, they have a massive saving on wages. No backpay to finance, no "one-off" payments to find.

What can the workforce do now. Go on strike? They already did that on 18 days last year. Saved the company around a quarter billion quid in wages, pension contributions, NI payments etc etc.

Company now enforcing change to terms and conditions without any Union collaboration. In fact, the Union are virtually powerless at the moment.

Lengthy strike? How long will the workforce last on zero wages before that collapses?

Quick maths lesson for all RM employees.

GLS valuation approx £4bn. Current Mkt Cap of IDS £2.2bn. Take one from the other equals Royal Mail is valued in the market at MINUS £1.8bn. It really won't hurt the Company if RM goes into administration.

Most of bills come by email now, or I can log in to see them. As the younger generation grow up with the digital era they will do the same.

"Despite the junk mail, many millions of important letters still require prompt delivery - HMRC, Council Tax, Hospital Appointments etc etc"

You're kidding me.,

Hospital Appointments?

Personal experience. You missed your appointment sir.
What appointment?

The one we notified you of in the letter?

What letter?

Morning or two after appointment - letter arrives!!!!

Far easier to text you - as they did for your vaccination jabs. The texts, the reminders before hand, etc etc.

As to council tax they have 3 months to get it to you. Council tax starts 1st April - most pay by direct debit so it could easily be emailed in a pdf form!

Likewise HMRC. You file a tax return online, they can contact you online. Easy peesy.

No need for letters for any of these!

In fact there is little need for "letters" at all given modern tech and communications. And unlike "Letters" email correspondence doesnt go missing!!
(Unless you give them an incorrect email address of course)

@lefrene

Totally agree wth you but........

,,,if RM were to go pop, say tomorrow, it would be a massive political problem - not least for the Tories who privatised it.

Despite the junk mail, many millions of important letters still require prompt delivery - HMRC, Council Tax, Hospital Appointments etc etc.

So there cannot be a lengthy period with no service whilst a new service is set up from scratch. The unions are well aware of this and that is why they (probably rightly) think that any administration will quickly lead to re-nationalisation.

A genuine private commercial enterprise could deliver letters encarter, and make good profits if not encumbered with the lunacy that HM Gov piles onto the shoulders of RM.

In the name of 'green' rural deliveries could be down to two a week and once a fortnight in obscure bits of Scotland and Wales. If they want it sooner go and collect it from the Post Office, like much of Europe and the USA. No more being forced to do the 'last mile' at a loss so that competitors can take the huge profits for grotesquely overpaid simple trunking.

Get rid of the management, it's such a simple business that you barely need anyone above the level of foreman.

The large shareholder knows this, and is no doubt poised to enact stark staring simple things once RM is declared bust.

"And who will deliver the 5 billion letters every year?"

People still send and receive letters???

If we ended Junk mail and go paperless for most things think of all the trees saved that are needlessly chopped down to enable this waste of paper.

Talks have (predicatbly) collapsed. Unions not that bothered - happy to call management's bluff as Administration in their view would lead to re-nationalisation and a resounding 3-0 away win for them!

Meanwhile prices gone up by double digit %s - a real kick in the teeth for customers given how poor the service has been in terms of strikes, lateness and missing items.

Have been through my business to find savings to try to compensate for the increases (overseas hike particularly bad). Unlike RM I only raise prices a last resort, not least as I operate in a compeititve market. Will continue to find more ways to shift away from RM - and have actually considered stopping exporting small packets due to cost, customs hassle etc (which cant be good for UK Plc!)

The RM is like avery old fmaily dog - about time it had once last trip to the vets and it is never going to recover.
