03/9/2007 15:13 | It is good to see the focus at MED switch towards building a sales network, I'd love to hear of them landing a contract or two directly with major customers. | naeclue
03/9/2007 12:54 | More good news! MicroEmissive Displays (MED) has appointed another two partners in the Far East to serve its key Asian markets. Agreements have been signed with Galaxy Far East Corporation in Taiwan and Desner Electronics in Singapore to market MED's "eyescreen" technology for portable head mounted displays and electronic viewfinders. Paul van Eynde, Sales and Marketing Director at MED (Edinburgh, Scotland) said: "These new distribution partnerships in Asia will enable us to put additional weight behind our worldwide sales and marketing thrust... | thecurrymonster
28/8/2007 09:12 | With its recent move into production and commercial shipment of its top-emissive, polymer-based organic light-emitting diode (P-OLED) microdisplays, Edinburgh, Scotland-based MicroEmissive Displays (MED) has become the first European company to manufacture such devices at volume levels. One critical component of MED's Dresden factory ramp-up is the licensing and materials supply deal that it signed in May with Vitex Systems Inc. and its tool partner, ANS Korea. "The introduction of the Barix process into our manufacturing process will result in significant improvements to the quality and reliability of our next-generation displays," explained John McEachran, MED's director of operations. "The leading-edge encapsulation technology from Vitex and excellent support surrounding ANS's production equipment enabled us to meet our aggressive production ramp goals." ... ...Mark Hartney, CTO of the U.S. Display Consortium, sees MED's ramp to volume production as "a positive step, since there has been limited production for P-OLEDs in the past." ... ...Hartney believes that Sumitomo Chemical's recent acquisition of Cambridge Display Technology, the industry pioneer that licenses its proprietary P-OLED technology to MED, "will strengthen the CDT technology, as it provides a lot more patient capital behind [it]. They had an ongoing relationship and already had [the Sumation] joint venture for materials production, so there has been a strong sentiment for support from Sumitomo already." For its part, MED does "not expect to see any change in the relationship with CDT," according to Miller. | thecurrymonster
23/8/2007 13:18 | Interview in Electronics Weekly with the boss of Cambridge Displays - mostly about the sale of CDT to Sumitomo. It's worth a read, as MED license technology from CDT. MED get a brief mention in the article: While CDT's technology has not hit the mass market, products are already available that include its materials and know-how. Osram is making displays up to 125mm for the medical and instrumentation markets and MicroEmissive Displays of Edinburgh is ramping up P-OLED manufacture for electronic viewfinders. | thecurrymonster
20/8/2007 08:34 | When I spoke to an MED guy at the AGM, he said that the major interest was in glasses with displays incorporated. Their technology dropped the price point to about $100 (sell price I think). There are existent products on the market: Price is about 3 times the MED version. They were talking to several groups about this type of product, as well as chasing the markets listed by Friars, but the greatest interest was the eyewear. | naeclue
19/8/2007 18:35 | Microemissive Displays Start Commercial Production of Polymer OLEd Displays Vitex Systems, Inc., a leading technology developer, licensor and engineering service provider for thin-film encapsulation and moisture barrier films used in flexible electronic products and displays, today announced that its customer and licensee, Microemissive Displays (AIM: MED.L) of Edinburgh, Scotland, has commenced volume production and commercial shipment of its leading-edge polymer-based OLED microdisplays. Today signals an important milestone for Vitex in its effort toward full-fledged commercialization of OLED displays leveraging the company's proprietary BarixTM thin-film encapsulation and Barix resin system material. John McEachran, director of operations for MED, noted "The thin-film encapsulation process technology provided by Vitex has allowed our company to take full advantage of our unique Polymer OLED microdisplay design. Our eyescreenTM product packs 76,800 pixels on a tiny, 6mm diagonal, silicon chip but delivers our customers a superior viewing experience. We are pleased to be working with both Vitex and its partner, ANS. The leading-edge encapsulation technology from Vitex and excellent support surrounding ANS' production equipment enabled us to meet our aggressive production ramp goals." The adoption of Vitex's unique, extremely small (less than 0.5 mm) edge-seal process is one of the key features allowing MED to achieve their leading-edge performance. "We are very pleased that Vitex and our equipment partner and licensee, ANS of Korea, were able to work in close collaboration with MED-enabling them to ramp their product into volume production, as scheduled" noted Chyi-Shan Suen, director of marketing for Vitex Systems. He added, "We're equally pleased in that today's announcement marks a further step in our effort to accelerate adoption of our leading thin-film encapsulation solution in the development of next-generation displays and electronics products." The cooperation between Vitex and MED began last year. Earlier this year, ANS has established a full service center in Dresden, Germany to service MED and other customers interested in pursing thin film encapsulation for OLEDs, thin film solar cells and other organic electronics.
