London Police Using Fuel-Cell Scooters to Fight Crime, Emissions

by
Anna Hirtenstein

‎February‎ ‎7‎, ‎2017‎ ‎4‎:‎18‎ ‎PM‎ ‎EET

Hydrogen refueling performs as well as petrol, faster than EVs

Intelligent Energy to supply hydrogen fuel cells for scooters

London’s metropolitan police will use hydrogen fuel cells to power scooters in a trial of zero-emissions technology to fight crime and pollution.

The fuel cells will be supplied by Intelligent Energy Holdings Plc, according to a statement from the Loughborough, U.K.-based company. Each cell will be able to generate 4 kilowatts of electricity through a chemical reaction, about the same as a solar panel system for a family home.

Adopting clean transport would allow London police force to crack down on greenhouse gas emissions that have increasingly become a public health concern. London broke the annual limit for air pollution just five days into 2017, according to the capital’s main monitoring system.

“A key concern today is air pollution in London and other urban centers throughout the world,” said Martin Bloom, chief executive officer of Intelligent Energy. “Fleet vehicles will play a role in achieving this. With no established refueling infrastructure needed.”

Fuel cells have slowly moved toward commercialization, leaving laboratories after years of experimentation. Companies are designing them for diverse applications from home heating to oil and gas extraction and transportation.

Hydrogen fuel cells compete with electric motors for a share of the clean transport market. Refueling takes about the same amount of time as filling up at a petrol station, faster than a plug-in can charge which typically takes at least 30 minutes. However, the supply chain for hydrogen is nascent and the cells are not yet mass-produced unlike the lithium-ion batteries that go into cars such as Tesla Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt.

CAVEAT> Debt, convertible loan stock, need to work out the effects of the exit from the towers in India - My worry is that there may well be unexpected costs to come once the books are closed.

So what would be a realistic value of the company today ??

Excellent news, but this was mentioned in September at the Analyst and Investor meeting... So it took around 5 months for it to come out and it's "only" a trial. We need a big sale somewhere!!

Very positive news, given the wealth of no news! Not that it worries me, as I believe that when news does start to flow (and it will) it will be market changing news and not constant drivel.

Intelligent Energy’s fuel cells stacks to be used in Met Police zero emission scooter trial

Published on Tue 7 February, 2017

Loughborough, UK – 7 February 2017 – Intelligent Energy’s British fuel cell technology will be at the heart of a fleet of scooters to be used on London’s roads this summer as part of a hydrogen fuel cell technology fleet trial with the city’s Metropolitan Police.

Intelligent Energy has provided the fuel cell stacks for the Suzuki Burgman scooters, stack technology designed and engineered here in the U.K. The Burgman was the world’s first fuel cell scooter to achieve the EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval.

”We are delighted to announce this latest milestone,” said Intelligent Energy’s Group CEO Martin Bloom. “The Met Police is one of the world's most innovative in reducing vehicle emissions from its fleet, setting a precedent for police forces globally. We are pleased this initiative involves one of our closest partner’s, Suzuki, with whom we have a 10 year relationship. The scooters will use our 4kW air cooled fuel cells, a compact lightweight package designed to meet automotive requirements, standards and safety criteria. This brings closer the commercialisation of hydrogen fuel cell scooters.

“A key concern today is air pollution in London and other urban centres throughout the world. We need to look at ways to reduce emissions. Fleet vehicles will play a role in achieving this. With no established refuelling infrastructure needed - they simply deploy a back-to-base refuel strategy - this is an enabler for change.”

When it comes to refuelling, the scooters can be refuelled in minutes. Charging times and range are two of the biggest challenges for electric vehicles, and are among the key strengths for fuel cell electric vehicles like the Burgman. Intelligent Energy was instrumental in operating a fleet of zero emission PEM fuel cell black cabs in London during the 2012 Olympics and this latest announcement highlights Intelligent Energy’s role as a key player in shaping the future of clean transportation in the Capital.

The 4kW stacks used in the scooters offer power for other applications, including range extension for battery-powered electric vehicles, four wheel vehicles and auxiliary power - especially for diesel replacement.

IEH would be obliged to issue an RNS if any major contract or potential major contract was placed by Tata or any other company, as that is price sensitive material which has to be announced. Looking at the last outlook statement by the company ,some news on contracts must be due soon, before another 12 months goes by.

IEH is an OEM supplier and as such don't expect news about their customers to be published. The news will be buried in the financial numbers.

IEH/ EE India may well be supplying Tata Motors with HFC's and unable to publish details about such a deal.

Hydrogen Council seeks to help expand the use of hydrogen fuel cells

Several leading automotive, energy, and engineering firms have come together to established the “Hydrogen Council.” The council was announced alongside the World Economic Forum’s Davos Summit and aims to establish hydrogen fuel as a tool that can be used to ease the transition away from fossil-fuels toward cleaner forms of power. BMW, Shell, Total, and Toyota are among the companies that have involved themselves in the new Hydrogen Council.

Companies expected to accelerate their investments in the hydrogen space

The companies that are part of the Hydrogen Council have already invested an estimated $1.4 billion into hydrogen technologies. The founding members of the Hydrogen Council plan to accelerate investments in these technologies in the coming years in the hopes of helping hydrogen fuel cells play a larger role in several sectors. The Hydrogen Council will now seek to work with other businesses, investors, and even government organizations in order to help develop better fuel cell technology and aid in the establishment of a comprehensive hydrogen fuel infrastructure.

Hydrogen fuel cells continue to gain traction in the auto industry

Hydrogen fuel cells have been used in industrial sectors for several years, but these energy systems have begun seeing more use in the auto industry and other spaces as well. Automakers are interested in promoting the use of fuel cells because of their clean transportation capabilities. Most major automakers have launched vehicles equipped with fuel cells, but these vehicles lack the support of a decent fueling infrastructure. The Hydrogen Council will be urging world governments to invest in the development of this infrastructure in order to support clean transportation.

Hydrogen Council could help promote fuel cells

The Hydrogen Council may come to play a major role in the expansion of fuel cell technology. The companies that comprise the Hydrogen Council have already invested heavily in fuel cells and have been outspoken proponents of hydrogen in general. With the aid of the Hydrogen Council, fuel cells may become much more common in various industries, especially if the infrastructure needed to support their widespread use is established.
