Rise could be connected to the recent report on the large number of Britons who take out payday advance loans at extortionate interest rates. Govt policy is only likely to further increase the demand for such short term funding.

Aishah,
A relatively small move up in gold is not really significant for HAT.This has been undervalued.

Stegegro,
Two points;
1.Where do you get 15% in a month?That hasn't happened.
2.As eggbacon has said,it isn't like gold mining where the value of the gold drops straight to the bottom line.
I predict very good results coming up....but I may be wrong..I often am.You were right IMO that the share price is often about the gold price, but investors will eventually catch on.

Banks dont have a product they are selling drop 15% over the space of a month though.

Any gold they bought a month ago is worth 10% - 15% ish (maybe more as gold is down + GBP up) less than it was.

So margins get pummeled when gold price is falling.

GBP gold price has generally been rising for the past few years, making margins great.

Having said that - this share shouldnt really be about the gold price, but seems it often is.

I believe that both ABM & HAT have to demonstrate in their forthcoming results/interims & even by investor presentations that they both have expanding businesses based on sound business models and that the rising or current high price of gold is just icing on the cake.
At the end of the day they will make money out of buying and selling gold items regardless of the price of gold. They simply buy it cheaper than they sell it.
Banks for example make money (well in theory!)regardless of the base rate. Same thing - they borrow at one rate and lend at a higher one.

Agreed Phil.I think the fall in gold prices will be very short term anyway.I expect the uptrend on gold to reassert itself quite quickly. Also, you need to bear in mind the pawn broking side which just couldn't have better macro conditions. This stock is very undervalued and I will definitely add on any further weakness.(trading on 6 times).

I hold both within my AIM Portfolio which i have constructed for IHT purposes.
I don't think holders of both stocks need to lose too much sleep although the
price falls are quite sharp.

Gold price in £ is falling heavily.
First time for ages.
Means they wont make as much from gold.

I assume thats reason for drop.
Certainly reason i sold.

Price unduly depressed. TMI comment:
"...broker Numis has upgraded forecasts and now expects pretax profit of £21.1m and eps of 42.9p for this year, making the shares look cheap. Buy"
