The Oil Market Is Already Looking Beyond Omicron

By Alex Kimani - Jan 17, 2022, 4:00 PM CST
Several investment banks believe that demand will outstrip supply in early 2022
Just a handful of OPEC members are capable of meeting higher production quotas
IHS' Daniel Yergin: it's almost inevitable that shale output will go in reverse and decline thanks to drastic cutbacks in investment and only later recover at a slow paceN

We are halfway through the first month of the new year, and oil's bull run is showing no signs of slowing. Oil futures have vaulted 12% in the first two trading weeks of the new year, boosted by several catalysts, including supply constraints, worries of a Russian attack on neighboring Ukraine, and growing signs the Omicron variant won't be as disruptive as feared.

Brent crude futures settled $1.59, or 1.9%, higher in Friday's session at a 2-1/2-month high of $86.06 a barrel, gaining 5.4% in the week, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained $1.70, or 2.1%, to $83.82 per barrel, rising 6.3% in the week. Both Brent and WTI futures have now entered overbought territory for the first time since late October.

Russia Seen Struggling to Keep Pace With OPEC+ Oil-Supply Hikes
Bloomberg) -- Russia may be able to deliver only about half of its scheduled increases in crude production over the next six months, joining the ranks of OPEC+ nations that are struggling to ramp up even as fuel demand rebounds from the pandemic.

With crude already trading above $85 a barrel in London, the outlook for Russian output leaves the global market looking even tighter than expected. It risks amplifying the energy-price surge that’s contributing to the highest inflation in decades.

The OPEC+ member is supposed to be adding 100,000 barrels a day of crude to the market each month, but growth ground to a halt in December. Due to a decline in drilling last year, most analysts polled by Bloomberg News expect Russia’s actual monthly increases can go no higher than 60,000 barrels a day in the first half of 2022.

Oil Up Over Mideast Tensions, Tight Supply
Commodities1 hour ago (Jan 18, 2022 04:22)
Investing.com – Oil was up on Tuesday morning in Asia, reacting to a series of drone strikes on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that were attributed to Yemen’s Houthi group.

Brent oil futures rose 0.99% to $87.34 by 11:16 PM ET (4:16 AM GMT) after hitting a high of $87.00, the highest since Oct. 30, 2014, earlier in the session. WTI futures jumped 1.34% to $84.42, not far from a more than two-month high of $84.78 hit earlier. However, trade on Monday was subdued due to the holiday in the U.S.
