ERBIL - The US is now "implementing" sanctions on Turkey in response to Ankara's military offensive against the Kurdish forces in Syria, as Washington says it deteriorated the regional situation.

Pompeo wrote on Twitter on Monday that the Turkish incursion into Syria has been continued and that it has created "a growing and disastrous humanitarian crisis."

"We remain committed to a political solution to the conflict in Syria in line with UNSCR 2254."

"President Donald J. Trump has now signed an Executive Order to press Turkey to halt its military offensive against northeast Syria and adopt an immediate ceasefire," reads a statement by Pompeo's office. "The Executive Order gives the Department of Treasury and the Department of State, the authority to consider and impose sanctions on individuals, entities, or associates of the Government of Turkey involved in actions that endanger civilians or lead to the further deterioration of peace, security, and stability in northeast Syria."

After the White House announced last week that the US forces would withdraw from Syria, Turkey soon began an operation against the Kurdish forces in northeast of Syria.
