17/3/2016 17:03 | Gulf Keystone shares plummeted to seven-year lows on Thursday after the struggling oil explorer warned that it might not meet significant debt repayments due next month. Shares in the London-listed group lost more than 13pc to hit lows not seen since March 2009, at just below 10p a share. The Kurdistan-based oil producer admitted there was a “low likelihood” it would need to sell off assets to cover its multi-million dollar debts. In its full-year report the group said it faced “material uncertainties” surrounding its ability to meet its coupon payments. It is due to pay $250m in April and $325m in October. The group put itself up for sale in February last year after a long struggle with debt, in part due to the Kurdistan government’s failure to pay at least $100m that it owed for oil exports. But the oil operator has faced growing challenges as global oil prices plunged to 12-year lows while geopolitical tensions in the region have raised investor concerns. Gulf Keystone boss Jón Ferrier said the company planned “strenuous efforts” to strengthen its balance sheet, “not only to ensure our ability to remain as a going concern, but also to be able to provide new capital to increase production and as a solid foundation for the longer-term future of the company”. “Against a well-publicised challenging backdrop, both across the industry and in the region, the team is actively managing all aspects of the business over which we can assert control,” he added. | mr roper | |
