GDF SUEZ partners with Barcelona to design and develop the City of tomorrow
Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GDF SUEZ, and Xavier Trias, Mayor of the city of Barcelona, Spain, signed a strategic partnership in regard to the city of tomorrow. This agreement follows suit to the "City Protocol", an initiative launched by the city of Barcelona last July, to establish a model of excellence and reference in terms of developing solutions for sustainable cities projects.

Within this partnership, the city of Barcelona has already entrusted GDF SUEZ with the implementation of a smart city dashboard, a unique IT tool designed and developed by the Group for collection, analysis, and optimal use of available data about the city (energy, water, traffic, etc.).

This smart city dashboard will enable concurrent monitoring and development of the city's territorial policy; control of infrastructures; event communication, anticipation and management; and optimization of investments.

In addition, GDF SUEZ will develop, alongside the local authority, several research and innovation projects focusing on the city of tomorrow. These projects will include the development of local and renewable energy (heating and cooling networks), as well as studies on urban mobility, smart grids and energy-positive buildings and districts.

At the signing ceremony, Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GDF SUEZ said:
"Today we are taking another step in our long-term collaboration with the city of Barcelona, which is already strongly committed in the field of sustainable urban development. This new strategic partnership illustrates the Group's strong local presence and its ability to design and deliver innovative solutions that are immediately applicable in the area of the city of tomorrow."

For his part, Xavier Trias, Mayor of Barcelone, stated: "In signing this agreement Barcelona welcomes GDF SUEZ on board as a partner in its drive to become a smart city leader, for the benefit of its people. In this respect, strengthening public-private partnership is key to improve energy efficiency and sustainable, smart urban development. This cooperation is also necessary to foster innovation and to implement new technologies to serve citizens."

GDF SUEZ has been working with the city of Barcelona in the area of energy and the environment for more than 100 years, through its subsidiaries Agbar (Aguas de Barcelona), Degrémont and Cofely and its subsidiary, Districlima. Through Districlima in particular, the Group commissioned two plants in 2004 and 2012 to feed the urban cooling network, by collecting sea water, and the heating network, by using steam from the incineration of waste, in the new district "22@" in Barcelona.

For 150 years, GDF SUEZ has been providing services to local authorities. Today the Group offers innovative solutions in many cities around the world, from Paris to Chongqing, through London (tri-generation plants concurrently producing heat, air conditioning and electricity), Amsterdam, Casablanca, and even Rio de Janeiro or Singapore.

More about "City Protocol"

"City Protocol" is a system for measuring the quality and efficiency of cities through structural, functional, environmental and social indicators. The goal is to create an international standard – like the Internet protocol – a model of excellence that will serve as a global reference for governments, cities, planners and anyone who wants to convert their city into a "smart city".

GDF SUEZ : Small scale LNG: GDF SUEZ takes positions in this high potential market with capacities in Zeebrugge LNG terminal
12/21/2012| 11:01am US/Eastern

GDF SUEZ continues to develop its small scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) activities in North West Europe following the award by Fluxys of additional berthing and storage capacity long term rights at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal. GDF SUEZ will have access to these capacities after the completion of the second jetty being constructed by Fluxys (expected in 2015). Those capacities will enable GDF SUEZ to reload small LNG carriers, such as LNG feeders and LNG bunkering vessels that will supply LNG as marine fuel for shipping companies.

LNG as a fuel for ships will develop in the future in a context of increasing pressure on maritime regulatoryconstraints on particle emissions in North Europe, as well as on fuel oil prices. Worldwide potential could reach more than 30 MTPA by 2025. LNG offers financial advantages and has various environmental benefits compared to diesel: CO2 emissions are 15-20% lower, the particulate matter content is 95% lower, the emission of sulphur is reduced by 90% and of NOx by 80%. Also, noise pollution of engines running on LNG is limited.

GDF SUEZ is already developing small scale LNG activities in Europe. Earlier this year, GDF SUEZ and GASNOR signed an LNG sales agreement for the supply of 7.5 TWh over a 12 year period. LNG volumes will be loaded first by trucks, from January 2013. In parallel, the Group is involved in the supply of LNG as fuel for trucks business through its affiliates Electrabel in Belgium, GDF SUEZ LNG Solutions in the Netherlands, and GNVert in France.

GDF SUEZ is one of the global LNG leaders and has a significant presence in regasification terminals around the world. Its LNG portfolio of 16 MTPA is sourced from 6 countries. The Group operates a fleet of 17 LNG carriers. The Group is the main LNG importer in the Atlantic Basin and the 2nd operator of LNG import terminals in Europe. In Western Europe, GDF SUEZ has access to long term regasification capacities in Zeebrugge, Belgium, Isle of Grain, the United Kingdom, Montoir-de-Bretagne and Fos sur-Mer, France.

French Electricity Tariffs to Increase 2.5% in January-Ministry
PrintAlert
EDF (EU:EDF)
Intraday Stock Chart
Today : Wednesday 19 December 2012
By Geraldine Amiel
PARIS--Regulated electricity tariffs in France are set to increase 2.5% from January to take into account costs related to subsidies for renewable energies and to guarantee the same treatment to all French households despite geographical discrepancies, the French environment and energy ministry said Wednesday.
Since July, French regulated tariffs include a charge of 10.5 euros ($13.84) per megawatt per hour, under a scheme known as CSPE. Following the tariff increase in January, the charge will be brought to EUR13.5/MWh, the ministry said.
The ministry wasn't able to provide further details on the increase to consumers' bills.
The French government has pledged to defend households' spending power during the economic crisis in Europe, but it is also seeking to boost renewable energies, a move that entails higher investments and could substantially increase customers' bills, as in Germany.
The energy regulator Commission de Regulation de l'Energie has calculated that the charge should be raised to EUR18.8/MWh for 2013 to take into account higher costs as well as to compensate French power producer Electricite de France SA(EDF.FR) for losses incurred after the charge remained unchanged over the previous years.
By EDF's latest calculations, the government owes it as much as EUR5 billion from the CSPE supposed to guarantee customers the same tariffs throughout the French territory, be they on the mainland or remote overseas territories as far as New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon off the coast of Canada's Newfoundland. The scheme also covers subsidies for individual renewable power producers.
The debt will be reimbursed over several years, the ministry also said.

GDF Suez Sells 60% of Renewable Capacities in Canada
12/17/2012| 03:56am US/Eastern

PARIS--GDF Suez SA (>> GDF SUEZ) Monday said it is selling a 60% stake in its Canadian-based renewable power activities to Japan's Mitsui & Co.(>> Mitsui & Co Ltd) and a consortium led by Fiera Axium Infrastructure Inc. for an enterprise value of around 1.5 billion euros ($1.97 billion), in a move that will help reduce its debt by EUR1 billion.

The French power group will retain a 40% interest in the 680 megawatt production capacities as well as their operatorship, while it will continue to develop its own new renewable projects in Canada.

GDF Suez has been trying to cut its debt and reduce its exposure to mature markets in the face of weaker energy demand, power-production overcapacity and increased competition stemming from Europe's crisis, while confronted with capped regulated gas tariffs in France and higher taxes on nuclear operations in Belgium.

Out of the EUR5 billion worth of assets the group has planned to sell, it has now achieved around EUR3.9 billion, it also said.

"This transaction represents an excellent example of monetizing value created through our investments, alongside retaining the upside from future renewable developments and from our operations and maintenance experience," the group's Chairman and Chief Executive Gerard Mestrallet said in a statement.

The 680MW portfolio comprises 363MW of operating wind facilities, and a further 317MW of wind and solar capacity that is expected to start commercial operation between 2013 and 2014. All projects are backed by power purchase agreements with provincial utilities. The facilities are located in Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia

Norway's Crude Oil Output Continues to Disappoint
PrintAlert
BP (NYSE:BP)
Intraday Stock Chart
Today : Friday 14 December 2012
By Kjetil Malkenes Hovland
OSLO--Norway has missed its oil production target for a third consecutive month and won't achieve its 2012 goal for output because of maintenance and technical problems, mostly involving fields operated by BP Plc (BP) and Statoil ASA (STO).
November crude oil production was 15% below the official forecast, while September were also off by 12% and 15% respectively, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said.
Oil production is about 4% below expectations for the year so far, the government agency said.
Norway's crude oil output peaked in 2000 at 3.12 million barrels per day. It was about half that in 2011. Output averaged 1.443 million barrels a day in November, when maintenance and technical problems kept the Valhall and Hod fields operated by BP out of service for a second month.
Three other fields--BP's Ula and Tambar and the Oselvar field operated by the DONG Energy AS S (DONG.YY)--also remained closed, because of a hydrocarbon leak.
Plans to start production have been delayed at two other fields. One, the BP-operated Skarv field, is expected to start pumping in December but that will not save the production target, the agency said.
Production at Gjoa, operated by GDF Suez (GSZ.FR), and Statoil's Njord, Asgard and Troll fields have also been affected by technical problems or planned maintenance, according to the directorate.
The production start-up at the Talisman-operated Yme field is still uncertain after it was evacuated earlier this year due to cracks in the platform structure.
Total petroleum production by end-November 2012 is slightly higher than in the year-earlier period, at 1.294 billion barrels of oil equivalent, or about 3.86 million barrels per day. This includes oil, gas, condensates and natural gas liquids.
