A ST Asaph-based business has been selected to supply equipment for “Challenger 3”, a planned fourth generation British main battle tank in development for the British Army.

Gooch and Housego (G&H) also received a visit from Vale of Clwyd MP, James Davies, on Friday (March 31).

As well as discussing issues such as defence spending and the change in military thinking as a result of the invasion of Ukraine, the main focus was on the challenges facing G&H in the area.

Speaking following the visit, Dr Davies said: “It was great to visit G&H in St Asaph on Friday and to find out more about the business and its future plans.

“The company is going from strength to strength, winning business relating to its core activity of providing equipment for armoured fighting vehicles.

“Of particular note was G&H being selected as the provider of the driver’s periscope system and the gunner’s auxiliary sight for the Challenger 3 programme.

“As well as continued success in its traditional markets, G&H has enjoyed significant success in using its engineering skills to diversify into other optics and photonics fields.

“It has recently completed a project in support of satellite to earth laser communications and the development of new capabilities in support of the UK’s future weapons programmes.

Gooch & Housego plc issued an update on trading for the six months ended 31 March 2023. Group revenue for the six month period is expected to be circa £71.0 million (31 March 2022: £54.1 million) supported by favourable exchange rate movements and the effects of price increases to offset cost input inflation. The outlook is solid, as at 31 March 2023 the Group’s order book stood at £124.4 million (31 March 2022: £119.9 million), an increase of 3.8% and provides good coverage for expected second half revenues. The Group’s commercial team remains focused on passing on higher costs through pricing, the b/s remains strong with net debt circa £19m. Full year trading is expected to be in line with management's previously reported expectations, a return to statutory profit and EPS around 29p. Valuation is improving, but momentum is still a major cloud with share price still in a 21-month correction. GHH remains a share to monitor for the time being...

Good to read about the new orders inbound for the A&D arm of the business which has been until now the weakest arm of the business. In the future I'd think defence will be a good profitable business.
