I wouldn't suggest anyone visiting Goa should waste their money going to see the Taj Mahal. I was working in India a few years back and travelled by train down from Delhi to Agra for a weekend to see this famous building. It's only a marble-clad building - that's all it is. No interesting contents to marvel at.

Don't be misled by the stunning photo of Princess Diana sitting in solitude in front of the building. The officials must have cleared the place of the teeming crowds and the baboons that badger the visitors for food. And after you have seen a few of these mogul palaces/mauseleums (which you do as you travel India) they all look much the same. Outside the boundaries of the Taj is a huge slum village of shanties with open sewers.

Some of our people went to Goa before returning to the UK, and from their accounts it was a good holiday place.

Stayed in Calangute a few years back - food and drink excellent and very cheap and that's speaking as one who doesn't like Indian food!
Used Goa as a base to do the Golden Triangle tour of India - the Taj Mahal is a must see!
The season runs from Nov to Apr. If, as someone else says above Feb is too late (though we are considering going next Feb) then go after Nov. The reason for that is that the year we were there the police had been bribed by the hotels to pull down all the beach shacks as soon as they were erected in order to try and get the tourists to eat in the hotels. This was after the council(?) had just put up the rents for the shacks 6 fold and made them pay for their own electricity supply. Seemingly in previous years they just used to run electricty from the nearest house and paid the householder a fee.
Anyway towards the end of our 2 weeks they got round to erecting the shacks again, but we missed out on most of them. It may not happen every year but the shacks should definitely be up from Dec onwards. (They have to be rebuilt every year!).
There was a holiday program on a few weeks back which featured Goa and the shacks were all in evidence then.

I stayed in The Sun Village Hotel in Bagga - got off Teletext it was All Inclusive but you don't really need AI - just did'nt cost anymore than B&B though.
Food is good there & no one I saw got ill from anythng other than over indulgence.
I know many people who go in our winter year after year for weeks & love it.

I have heard of pigs that eat your poo before it hits the ground if you go for a plop in the bushes when you are out of town. Snufle snuffle.
It sounds great I should go.

Apparently, the police 'nick' you for smoking 'Brixton Bananas' and if you don't pay the policeman a 'fine' on the spot, you go to jail for 2 years; even if it was just a Marlboro that you were smoking.

Be warned.

Cheap & fab food & drink (Lagers as in Indian resteraunts over here & a G&T will make you feel you're in a time warp), FANTASTIC beaches & Portuguese architecture, fabulous people (biased) ... mix of East & West BUT travel b4 Feb (at the latest) or you'll get roasted (particularly if fair complexioned)

JUST GO!

Anyone else interested in these? Educational Software and learning company. Last results showed reduction in losses but points that attracted me:

- cashpile of £3.4m vs market cap of £1.35m;
- turnover in Q1 of 2002 (£700k) more than whole of 2001

Bought in at recent dip. Any opinions?

All the best,
