Wether ive counted it twice or not its still warmed the thread up a little. And does not change the fact that GOA is going to rocket all the way to the Moon and back, and then to Mars. LOL!

I last was there in 1985....yes I know...ageing hippy and all that jazz! Stayed in Benaulim by Colva Beach...guess what...nobody there, had this magnificent palm fringed silver strand to myself and numerous large crabs (no, not the venereal type) that were busy burying themselves in the sand.

The house I stayed in was run by an ex-Portuguese colonial family who advised me to visit Old Goa to view the former government house, which then contained large wall portraits of every Portuguese governor since around 1500; all in chronological order. Outside a local described to me how he witnessed the arrival of the Indian army in its armed takeover of Goa in 1961, with all their military vehicles parked up in that street.

Apparently Dr Salazar, the then (fascist) dictator of Portugal had delayed negotiations with India for so long, even the sageike Nehru lost patience with him. Enraged...Dr Salazar sent a naval force with troop transports to get it back! However Colonel Nasser of Egypt thwarted this attempt at re-colonialisation by barring them from passing through the Suez canal!

While I was there I witnessed a riot (yes thats right... riot..almost could have been out of a Kipling story)...because the Delhi government wanted to impose Hindustani language for all public notices, signs documents etc. Goa is also the home of Vindalu and whilst I was there..fish Vindalu...you could have anything you liked as long as it was fish vindalu....the fish were caught from the beach in a net set by outriggers..then large teams would haul each end of the net
closer to the beach when it `boiled' with jumping fish.

I reached there over 2 nights on a tramp steamer from Bombay (Moghul Lines) as there were no direct flights in 1985 (Luftansa/Condor began direct flights from Germany shortly after). It would anchor off the coast frequently during the dead of night and people with torches would row out to bring new passengers and collect others. It was so cheap and relaxing.

I left by bus towards Mangalore. There are many Jain temples in that region carved into the mountainsides. You have to get other buses and travel up into the Deccan. Mudabidri is one such place...so peaceful and nobody there except an aged white robed priest who showed me around..like something out of the old testament.

People there have time for you...their eyes are clear (though some old people develop cataracts)...whatever...they don't seem to have lost the spirit. I'm aware it all sounds like a ramp...but try it...Kingfisher beer is so cheap!

GOA the share is the place to be in the stocks,i dont know of the goa in india ,
However heres a share well over sold in imho and has been doing all the right things,
Itis well positioned for gov contracts in the educational field, and has recently won one an order.
Its expected losses were less than half, as prudent management, with tight budget controlls, have shown to pay off,

There fall in share value is i believe the market makers doing as this company along with others in the same field will be well placed in the £50 billion educational (Gordon Brown) proposals to surport education, GOA are in for a lot of good action.
And now is the time to be buying its a buy.

I wouldn't suggest anyone visiting Goa should waste their money going to see the Taj Mahal. I was working in India a few years back and travelled by train down from Delhi to Agra for a weekend to see this famous building. It's only a marble-clad building - that's all it is. No interesting contents to marvel at.

Don't be misled by the stunning photo of Princess Diana sitting in solitude in front of the building. The officials must have cleared the place of the teeming crowds and the baboons that badger the visitors for food. And after you have seen a few of these mogul palaces/mauseleums (which you do as you travel India) they all look much the same. Outside the boundaries of the Taj is a huge slum village of shanties with open sewers.

Some of our people went to Goa before returning to the UK, and from their accounts it was a good holiday place.

Stayed in Calangute a few years back - food and drink excellent and very cheap and that's speaking as one who doesn't like Indian food!
Used Goa as a base to do the Golden Triangle tour of India - the Taj Mahal is a must see!
The season runs from Nov to Apr. If, as someone else says above Feb is too late (though we are considering going next Feb) then go after Nov. The reason for that is that the year we were there the police had been bribed by the hotels to pull down all the beach shacks as soon as they were erected in order to try and get the tourists to eat in the hotels. This was after the council(?) had just put up the rents for the shacks 6 fold and made them pay for their own electricity supply. Seemingly in previous years they just used to run electricty from the nearest house and paid the householder a fee.
Anyway towards the end of our 2 weeks they got round to erecting the shacks again, but we missed out on most of them. It may not happen every year but the shacks should definitely be up from Dec onwards. (They have to be rebuilt every year!).
There was a holiday program on a few weeks back which featured Goa and the shacks were all in evidence then.
