RNS just out - and another prestigious contract win:

"JAMES FISHER DEFENCE AWARDED LONG-TERM CONTRACT BY THE AUSTRALIAN DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE

Scope extended to include the provision of wider submarine escape and rescue services and capabilities to maximise the safety of Australian Submariners

James Fisher Defence (JFD), the leading global subsea operations and engineering company, has been awarded a contract by the Commonwealth of Australia for the long-term provision of the Royal Australia Navy's (RAN) submarine escape and rescue capability for the next five years, plus options through to 2024.

The James Fisher Submarine Rescue Service (JFSRS) has provided escape and rescue services to the RAN since 2008 and was recently awarded a special commendation by the RAN's Commander Submarine Force for dedication and innovation during the recent Black Carillion exercise.

Building upon the existing six years of safe and successful operations, the new contract will incorporate the provision of Pressurised Submarine Escape Training, which will be delivered by JFD's instructors at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia. Additional enhancements to the JFSRS will include the design and manufacture of an integrated hyperbaric capability, together with a comprehensive training and exercise programme which will sustain and grow the capability, further assuring the ability of the service to respond to a submarine in distress.

"We are delighted to continue our successful partnership with the Royal Australian Navy," said Mike Howarth, Managing Director, James Fisher Defence.

"The safety of submariners remains at the heart of our business and the length of the contract is testament to the confidence the RAN has in JFD's ability to deliver. It is a source of great pride that the RAN has entrusted this key aspect of the Submarine Force's contingency planning to our organisation. The experience and commitment of our team continues to set new benchmarks and standards for submarine escape and rescue. This continuous improvement is the hallmark of how we deliver long-term value to all our customers."

The new contract will also showcase the breadth and depth of the new combined JFD/Divex organisation and the strength of the integrated service offering."

This is a hugely prestigious win for Divex, great stuff:

"Helium without the squealium
16 Oct 2014

Divex, of Aberdeenshire, UK has been awarded a contract to supply the US Navy with their state-of-the-art helium speech unscrambling diver communications system the HeliCom Matrix.

Divex, a subsidiary of James Fisher and Sons plc and a world leader in commercial and defence diving products, has received the order from the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) through American partner, Chase Supply Inc.

To be used at their deep trials and training facility in Panama City, Florida, the HeliCom Matrix is a fully digital diver communication system that provides communications for the chamber complex and wet test chamber. The client required a system where they could communicate with all personnel from one central system and were impressed with the large, easy to use, touch screen interface and how it could be tailored to suit their system.

Launched in 2010, the HeliCom Matrix is the first of its type; a helium speech unscrambling communication system which retains all of the original voice pattern to ensure clear, concise and intelligible communication is provided for divers operating in extreme depths and conditions. With improved speech intelligibility comes improved safety for the divers and this was a major contributing factor during the design phase.

Saturation divers use helium as the major component of the special breathing-gas mixture called heliox (a mixture of helium and oxygen). One of the disadvantages of helium is the "Donald Duck" effect on the voice which complicates the communication process. Early helium speech unscramblers created a lot of distortion which made it difficult for reliable diver communication.

The HeliCom Matrix achieves superior, crystal-clear diver helium voice communication through advanced DSP (digital signal processing) helium speech decoding techniques. The helium speech from the pressurised divers and the chamber occupants are mixed in an audio mixer before decoding to the selected gas and environmental settings by a digital signal processing circuit (DSP). This has been the key element of HeliCom’s success –the clarity of speech irrespective of the depth the diver is working.

HeliCom Matrix is a step forward over existing implementations because of the incorporation of precise modelling of the translations introduced by the Heliox mixture on the human voice including both pitch and envelope distortion. It has a high speech intelligibility level score, averaging 97% during modified rhyme tests at depths of up to 350metres depth – it is unrivalled in the field.

The HeliCom Matrix also offers automatic unscrambling which is unique to the Divex system. This removes the need for user interaction to control the depth at which the unscrambler is operating, providing greater accuracy and ease of use.

Divex MD, Derek Clarke said: “With the US Navy considered to be at the pinnacle of diving technology this win is very significant as it endorses the unique benefits HeliComTM brings to diver safety and comprehension of voice communications which are key to diving operations.”"

News of Fendercare being appointed to carry out LNG ship-to-ship services at Sohar in Oman, one of the few worldwide ports able to do so:

"SOHAR to join ports offering ship-to-ship LNG services

SOHAR Port and Freezone will join a group of ports offering LNG ship-to-ship services.

As announced at the 2014 Singapore International Bunkering Conference (SIBCON), measures are now in place to begin issuing licenses to STS service providers equipped to handle LNG.

Fendercare and SPT will be offered the opportunity to provide this service after requesting permission to begin operations. SOHAR Executive Commercial Manager Edwin Lammers revealed there are also plans to establish LNG bunkering facilities in SOHAR in the future.

Lammers explained: “We are delighted to announce that we have put all of the necessary licensing structures in place to be able to start LNG ship-to-ship services in SOHAR. Around the world there are currently only a few ports that are able to offer this service, among them Port of Rotterdam and Singapore.

“This will be the first phase of our project, and we will move quickly in issuing the new licenses and getting things up and running. The second phase will involve installing LNG bunkering services for vessels calling at SOHAR Port.”

The news comes just a few months ahead of the International Maritime Organisation’s 1 January 2015 deadline for cargo ships passing through Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) to reduce the level of sulphur oxide in fuel supplies to 0.1%. This has prompted an almost immediate worldwide investigation into potential LNG fuelling options.

“While the industry continues to explore safe and commercially viable options for reducing SOX levels in conventional fuels, many of the world’s biggest shipping lines are looking to bypass costly upgrades in favour of moving directly to LNG. We’ve anticipated this trend and expect the industry to develop fast,” concluded Lammers."

Hello Rivaldo,

There have been a few quite sizable trades this week. Money is coming off the table across the market. It is anyone`s guess as to how far the market will fall.

There is, however, no reason to be gloomy about FSJ`s prospects . I am very tempted to add to my holding at around the current price.

Great vote of confidence for FSJ's Fendercare:

"Fendercare Marine Recognized for Support to NATO Warships

Posted on Oct 8th, 2014

World leading marine products and services supplier, Fendercare Marine recently received praise for their fendering support to a flotilla of NATO warships in the Port of Cardiff during the NATO summit.

Yokohama pneumatic fenders were supplied by Fendercare Marine for the two largest vessels – the French anti-submarine frigate La Motte-Picquet and the Royal Navy’s newest warship, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan.

In total, 16 Yokohama pneumatic fenders (measuring 2.0m diameter. x 3.5m length) were used on the Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan and 8 Yokohama pneumatic fenders (measuring 3.3m diameter. x 6.5m length) were used on the French anti-submarine frigate La Motte-Picquet.

Following the NATO summit, Commodore AJG Miller CBE, Royal Navy said “I would like to take this opportunity to offer my gratitude for the support that all those at Fendercare Marine provided to my men and women on the ground in support of the NATO Warships visiting Cardiff for the recent NATO summit. The final result was in no small part due to the hard work and commitment from yourself and all those at Fendercare.”

Fendercare Marine has been a supplier of fenders and marine hardware to the MoD since 1999 and also supports navies throughout the world, winning a $29 million contract with the US Navy in 2012. From a base in the Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth, their Naval Solutions division also provides fabrication, welding and coating services for the MoD, having worked on nuclear submarines, warships and naval support vessels."

Interesting comment from Divex about current diving systems dating back to the '80's - should be lots more lucrative contracts if that's commonplace:

"Diving-equipment technology firm Divex has secured a “multi-million pound” contract to supply a saturation diving system to Keppel Singmarine.

The north east firm has been commissioned to provide engineering design, supply and installation of a 300 metre depth 18 man twin bell/twin hyperbaric lifeboat saturation diving systems to the Singaporean shipyard.

The systems will feature two side mate diving bells mated to individual transfer-under-pressure chambers, with divers housed in five saturation chambers.

Once manufactured at various global Divex facilities, including Aberdeen and Glasgow, South Africa and Australia, they will be installed on a new purpose-built vessel in Singapore, destined for BP’s Shah Deniz II Project in the Caspian Sea.

“This is a very important win for us particularly given the standing of both Keppel Singmarine and the ultimate owner, BP,” said Derek Clarke, Divex’ joint managing director.

“It is the culmination of many months of work and a fitting reward for all the effort put in by Divex staff to provide the very best diving technology.

“Current diving support vessels in the Caspian are from the era going back to the 80s so when she is operational she will herald a significant leap forward in diving technology terms”."
