ENGIE WINS £2.8M SOLENT UNIVERSITY ENERGY CONTRACT

13 September 2019 | Prithvi Pandya

Engie has won a 20-year contract worth £2.8 million at Solent University’s new sports complex, which has been connected to Southampton Geothermal Heating Company’s (SGHC) pioneering district energy scheme.

The SGHC is a working partnership between Engie and Southampton City Council that launched more than 30 years ago. The scheme supplies heat, chilled water and electricity to commercial and residential energy users across Southampton – currently serving a 2-kilometre radius of the energy centre.

Solent University has tasked Engie with the implementation of a new heating connection that would link up existing assets, as well as a new state-of-the-art sports centre.

The SGHC currently saves about 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year using heat from a large-scale combined heat and power (CHP) plant, supplemented by geothermal energy and conventional boilers.

The university required a new district heating connection with a substation to provide heating and domestic hot water for the new facilities with a predicted annual heating consumption of 620 megawatt hours a year and a contractual peak load of 875 kilowatts, which Engie is poised to deliver through the connection to SGHC.

About 150 metres of pre-insulated district heating steel pipework were installed adjacent to the Southampton Solent University building on East Park Terrace, Southampton.

Andrew Hart, managing director for Engie’s urban energy business, said: “We have adopted an incredibly flexible approach to our service delivery to ensure we can continue making connections to the scheme and extend this unique solution. We look forward to working with our partners in the council, as well as the university over the next 20 years to deliver a first-rate service for people and businesses in the region.”

Paul Colbran, chief information and infrastructure officer at Solent University, said: “Solent is undergoing a £100 million estate redevelopment programme to provide new and improve current campus facilities, and the new sports complex is just one element of that programme.

“With such a large infrastructure project and our desire to be cleaner, greener and more environmentally sustainable, the geothermal system helps us keep our emissions down and makes sense connecting with the current infrastructure already in place.”

Engie said the new system is operational and is delivering heating and cooling for the sports centre and beyond.

Christine LE STRAT, President of Pontivy Communaute, with Patrick VAUTIER, Sub-Prefect of Pontivy-Ploermel, Andre CROCQ, Regional Delegate Advisor on Energy Transition and Jo BROHAN, President of Morbihan Energies, are pleased to officially launch the West Grid project Synergy in Brittany, Wednesday, September 11th at 10am at the Palais des Congres in Pontivy, in the presence of all the partners1 involved in the construction and implementation of this innovative project, the first in France.

What is West Grid Synergy The project aims to increase and optimize the production and consumption of renewable gas in the territory of Pontivy Communaute. This renewable gas, produced from different processes (methanization of agricultural and agro-food wastes, recovery of biogas emitted by the fermentation of buried waste) must cover nearly 50% of the needs of the territory in 2025, that is to say say a local gas production higher than the consumption of the residential and tertiary sectors of the territory.

On the Pontivy Community, 2 biogas plants are already injecting renewable gas into the distribution network operated by GRDF. By the end of the year, the Agricultural College of the Big Oak will be the 3 th producer.

To achieve the value of all locally produced renewable gas, West Grid Synergy focuses on several technologies of the future

GRTgaz has created and installed in Noyal-Pontivy the keystone of the project, a pilot station called 'countdown'. For an investment of 3 million euros, this station allows a two-way flow of gas between the transmission network (GRTgaz) and the distribution network (GRDF) - when until then, traffic could only be made from the network transport to the distribution network. The main consequence of this innovation, Pontivy Communaute can accommodate new projects and surplus production injected into the distribution network will be able to supply neighboring territories.

The GRDF distribution network has also been adapted, by creating a network between Noyal-Pontivy and Pontivy. Thus, GRDF has increased the area of consumption and increases its capacity for renewable gas.

In addition, the integration of digital, through the deployment of smart meters on the territory, allows optimized management of networks.

Finally, the use of gas will be developed on the territory: Pontivy Community will host a natural gas vehicle station in early 2020, implemented by Morbihan Energies with the assistance of the Intermarche group, to allow road transport, businesses, communities and citizens to have a cleaner and locally produced fuel.

The partners of West Grid Synergy jointly lead all these projects to develop the use or production of biomethane on Pontivy Community to make it a national reference in the field. West Grid Synergy is also deployed on two Ligurian territories, Mauges Community and the Pays de Pouzauges.

To introduce this energy revolution to the general public, presentation workshops will be held from 14:00 at the Palais des Congres to bring young and old to discover this adventure.

Will be present: Patrick VAUTIER, Sub-Prefect of Pontivy-Ploermel, Christine LE STRAT, President of Pontivy Community, Andre CROCQ, Regional Delegate Advisor on Energy Transition, Jo BROHAN, President of Morbihan Energies, Christelle ROUGEBIEF, Client Director Territories GRDF Center -Ouest, Amaury MAZON, Territorial Delegate Atlantic Center GRTgaz

French Engie shared Azerbaijan’s gas contract with Anglo-Dutch Shell

French Engie shared Azerbaijan’s gas contract with Anglo-Dutch Shell

Baku, September 11 - Neftegaz.RU. ENGIE, Shell, Azerbaijan Gas Supply Company (AGSC) and SOCAR have agreed on a partial transfer of ENGIE’s Shah Deniz gas supply contract to Shell Energy Europe Limited.

ENGIE and Shell Energy Europe both previously secured gas supply from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz gas project under contracts signed in 2013. Under this latest agreement, Shell Energy Europe is significantly increasing the availability of gas for its customers by acquiring part of ENGIE’s 25-year contract.

ENGIE remains a significant buyer of Shah Deniz gas and conducts, as a mid-streamer, a dynamic optimization of its long-term position.

The transfer agreement, signed on September 5, 2019, covers supplies of Azerbaijani gas that will begin flowing into Italy upon completion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

AGSC was established by Shah Deniz PSA partners and SOCAR as the marketing company to sell gas produced from the Shah Deniz field to markets in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor.

Shah Deniz Stage 2 is a giant project that will add a further 16 billion cu m per year (bcma) of gas production to the approximately 10 bcma produced by Shah Deniz Stage 1.

Shell and Engie were among a handful of companies that agreed in 2013 to buy future gas offtake from Shah Deniz 2 -- which started up in June 2018 -- from the BP-led operating consortium under 25-year contracts.

"Under this latest agreement, Shell is significantly increasing the availability of gas for its customers by acquiring part of Engie's 25-year contract," Shell said in a statement.

Engie will remain a "significant" buyer of Shah Deniz 2 gas, it said, with the volumes still representing a "dynamic optimization" of the French company's long-term position.

Shah Deniz 2 -- which cost $28 billion to develop -- will produce 16 Bcm/year at plateau, on top of the existing production from the first Shah Deniz phase.

A total of 6 Bcm/year from Shah Deniz 2 is earmarked for the Turkish market through a sales contract with state-owned Botas. A further 10 Bcm/year is set to reach Greece, Bulgaria and Italy via the TAP pipeline, which is almost complete and is expected to begin operations in 2020.

Greece and Bulgaria are contracted to take 1 Bcm/year each of Shah Deniz 2 gas, leaving 8 Bcm/year for Italy and adjacent market hubs.

Shell said the transfer agreement with Engie, signed on September 5, covered supplies of Azerbaijani gas that will begin flowing into Italy upon completion of the TAP pipeline.

Other buyers that signed 25-year purchase deals in 2013 with the Shah Deniz 2 partners were Axpo Trading, Bulgargaz, DEPA, Enel, Uniper, Naturgy and Hera Trading.

Engie announces that its subsidiaries Endel and Tractebel have won from EDF a strategic share of the market for the replacement of primary components ranging from three to 7.5 tons, including elbows and pipes, on 900 MW power plants.

Highly technical, this project will mobilize the teams of several affiliates of Engie associated temporary group of companies (GME) in the heart of the plant. The replacement of the components will be spread over several production units until 2026.

'The realization of these projects with high stakes, particularly in terms of safety, involves taking into account significant physical and technical constraints, while securing the duration of unit shutdowns', says the energy group.
