08/1/2018 20:18 | Terry: good one! ;) Daydawning: thank you! Wcj: almost full marks, yes there has been a strike which is over now and it has severely impacted the industry. I deal directly with Darjeeling estates and have worked there in the past so I have my ear to the ground, I'm hoping the quality will not be adversely affected long term but it's true that tea bushes need regular (7-10 day) plucking cycles to make sure the freshest shoots are processed to maximise quality. This is more an economical matter than anything so I hope to hear a good pruning round has got it back on track but this will impact the yield for several years realistically. The only thing I can correct you on is that the highest grade (in orthodox/whole leaf) is fine tippy golden flowery orange pekoe, and in practice you will see variants at auction such as SFTGFOP, SFTGFOP1 and the likes (the s is for super) but they all mean the same thing essentially, and it's only really an indication of what mesh the leaves are caught by, as the grades are separated by pouring each batch through a tower of metal mesh sheets with descending sized holes, keeping the biggest leaves together and so on. And you're right, it's far too good for ordinary people! | ![]() cmackay
08/1/2018 18:47 | crmackay OT Enjoy your hot flush from Darjeeling. As I understand it the Darjeeling separatists have shut down the tea harvest there, and there will be no Darjeeling for a year. Thereafter there is a risk that the tea bushes may suffer from not having been picked. The separatists are of course on the side of the tea pickers, who they have now put out of a job. I believe that the top grade of Darjeeling is Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, or something like, shortened to TGFOP, and then re-lengthened to Too Good For Ordinary People. | ![]() wcj
