Yes, rather odd really. 5 widely dispersed trades totalling nearly 500k. OK, only £11k and there was an earlier sale of 300k; but I fancy the buying could well continue into tomorrow.

Seems aeons ago, but actually less than 5months since that 7.13p divi.

From an interview with Richard Lockwood, Manager of City Natural Resources High Yield Trust and also a Director of Kalahari Minerals.

" Two of the trust's top 20 holdings are in the emerging rare earths sector. The manager sees this as a "real growth market", particularly at the heavy end where the elements are used in specialised magnets and are only produced in minute quantities relative to demand."

marty,

I'm not so sure about the accuracy of that NAV figure, the poster doesn't seem to have taken into account the bank loans.

apologies all for o/t again...

Ford, worth a read up in more detail. Recently sold their cement operations for £357.m. Post 4817 on the PMHL board gives a fairly accurate recent update of the NAV of £3.39 per share vs price of £1.55 today.
Hope it helps. Best of luck with Polo! We should do very well!

sorry for o/t

marty - I liked the sound of discounts to cash plus buybacks, so I had a quick look at PMHL this morning. Not sure if I missed something, but it seems to be trading at a small premium to cash.
It does appear to be trading at a reasonable discount to NAV, but I'm not really sure how to value some of the assets, such as the iron ore trading business.
If China's economy keeps growing at recent rates it could be a real winner, but the turn-over for such a small profit looks a bit scary.
Not sure about property investments in China either. Again they could be a winner, or a herd of white elephants.
The buybacks could be good for a short-term punt, but with over 60% of the company already owned by the chairman, buybacks will increase his percentage and that could be a worry for long-term investors.
Thanks for highlighting it, but I feel more comfortable with Polo ;-)

Thanks fordtin. Good call. Done the same myself with Polo. Unsure here until we hear what they are using the cash for. Also holding PMHL - much bigger discount to the cash held and buybacks have started..

Still at a small discount to cash, but I've sold my last few to increase my Polo holding.

2.2p-2.25p today - so slowly ticking up.

Hoping for some positive action soon; would be good to have a winner as I'm 33% Cash & pretty well devoid of ideas elsewhere at the moment!

"I wonder whether Mellon & Dattels will start looking seriously at this area of investment again?"

Mark
This is what i have been thinking about lately. Will Mellon and Dattels start chasing rare materials instead of chasing CDN???

Any Thoughts welcomed.

Interesting that concern about REE supplies is spilling out into the public domain:

[referring to a four day meeting in China between Angela Merkel and a German delegation with Wen Jiabao, China's premier]

"...During the meeting in Xi'an, Ms Merkel said she was "worried" about Chinese limitations on the supply of rare earth minerals to global markets, prompting Mr Wen to say China would never block their export but that they should be sold abroad only at "a reasonable price and volume".

China controls about 90 per cent of the global supply of rare earth minerals, which are used in electronic devices, hybrid cars and military equipment..."

I wonder whether Mellon & Dattels will start looking seriously at this area of investment again?

Cheers,

Mark

"with a £27.5m holding in the quoted Central African Mining & Exploration Company"

If he held onto that you can knock the 2 off the front.
