Eight top shares that meet Jim Slater's investment rules

By Stockopedia and Ben Hobson | Wed, 15th November 2017 - 14:24

Slater's strategy focused on earnings growth, profitability, strong cashflow, low debt and signs of share price strength. It also included what's known as the PEG, or the 'price-earnings growth' factor.

The PEG measures whether the promise of growth comes at a reasonable price. It's calculated by dividing the forward price-to-earnings ratio of a share by the estimated future growth rate in earnings per share (EPS). Any share with a PEG over 1 would get short shrift from Slater. A score of 1 receives consideration and anything under 1 is worth a closer look.

Here are some of the companies that do currently pass the rules...

Name Mkt Cap £m Forecast PE Ratio PEG Slater ROCE %
VP 347.3 9.9 0.3 13.2 +9.9
Alumasc 61.1 7.6 0.5 19.5 +6.3

well done ELCO....good results ( based on a 2 minute look) & progress...& investing a lot in improving products etc, which is good..

& solid % growth for various numbers

& trading since the end date for these results is reported as good

so, based on a quick look the results look good to me

..( the revolving door for FDs ...& other departing dirs....is there a problem ?...who knows...well it hasnt stopped progress in last 2-3 yrs)

delayed reporting of 30k pnds buy at 44p around 10am this morning

might be part of the reason for today's rise...

One might question the selection process for an FD. How would Oscar Wilde put it? To loose 1 FD may seem like carelessness, to loose two is highly disturbing. The MM's have taken note and I have grave concerns over Mr. Ketteley despite his legion of followers. I would have sold my two holdings last month if there had been anyone to purchase them at the crazily high price they were shown by the MM's for some strange reason.

Imo there was no 6 months probation..

Imo if you hire a qualified experienced FD ...after due diligence..

Then you have to pay the contracted pay off if he leaves, except if gross misconduct.

..."terse announcement"

Indeed...

'Suddenly left'...

Guesses ?
A shouting match with someone higher up ?
(MD or chairman)

Refusal to bend or adjust the accounts as dictated from above ?

Not working hard enough to get the accounts out on time ?

Brain ache from handling different currencies etc. (Complicated in some aspects imo)

----

In last 5 years phps 1M quid gone in dir pay offs. imo

(Not common for FDs to leave for squabbles imo.....normally they are the king of the accounts...fullstop...and left to it)

Ive posted before about worrying short duration tenancy for directors...except Ketteley...

Anyone know the bod.....is there a problem with working with Ketteley ....or is it pure chance that directors stay less than 12 months....time after time after time...?

Plus they pay £43k a year to rent an office for the chairman iirc from a company owned by the chairman...and then need to rent another office for him for £5k p.a. in Burnham on crouch so he can be nearer the office🙄

I suspect his probationary period was 6 months.

ELCO seem to have a revolving door policy for the role of Finance Director. It's a bit like the hot seat on 'have I got news for you'. Not seen anything like it before.

Growth looks pretty decent, but this is a bit of a red flag for me I'm afraid.

Surprised nobody has commented on what seems the rather sudden departure of the Group Finance Director after only six months.

No reasons given in what seems a slightly terse announcement.

I'm still baffled as to why Mingy Machs seem so determined to keep the share price up even in the face of some chunky 'sells'.

maybe the 2-3p rise today wipes out your scrip issues ;-)

-----

Surprising the jump on tiny volume at end of the day...a 1p rise I was expecting since buys have kept going thru. but seemed to be getting filled without any problem...

perhaps the MM has filled a sell order (2 big trades shown) and doesnt have another block to sell...

Thanks, Steve, if they are increasing their charges that effectively rules them out.

I know Barclays will take up scrip issues if you have dividends reinvested. But I have just moved from them to Hargreaves Lansdown as Barclays were putting up their charges a lot for larger portfolios.

Cheers,
Steve.

What about moving your account to register your objection...or moving your ELCO holding out to cert format

...your broker might then review their policies....

I'm not surprised in the least that so few shareholders took up what appeared to be the very generous scrip dividend offer alternative. With my own broker (Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers) not allowing scrip issues in their nominee accounts, I contacted three others - with a view to transferring my custom - but none of them allowed 'scrips' online either.

With the scrip shares being priced at 38.95p and the current offer price now 49.0p, I've calculated that it's cost me £714. My broker's argument is that, being part of a large pooled holding, it was impossible for them to differentiate each individual shareholder's entitlement. Bunkum! How do they manage to allocate dividends then? And I've also done two rights issues with them in the past. I will be putting my complaint to the Financial Ombudsman in due course but, according to HLS, even if the Ombudsman agrees that this is an unfair practise, the broker can not be made to change their terms and conditions.

In the meantime, has any shareholder participated in an online scrip issue with their own broker?

edit: slight miscalculation, have amended my 'cost' figure.
