Important to remember that 3AEY was being tested in France well before they got approval on 23-Jan-17 as this article from 09 juin 2015 on trials in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne shows. So word of mouth etc has had more time to percolate as demonstrated by the R4 programme earlier in the year.

The British company Eden, which relies on US research, developed and filed a patent for a biocontrol product aimed at combating botrytis and identified under code 3AEY.
What is the 3AEY product?
It is composed of three microencapsulated volatile terpenes, and therefore stabilized. The 3AEY could be applied up to three days before harvest in grapes, and the re-entry time in the plot could be shortened compared to the anti-botrytis on the market. From a practical point of view, this product applies as a conventional fungicide, positioned at the end of the cycle.
What is its mode of action?
According to the Japanese company Sumi Agro, in charge of its development and marketing, this product combines two modes of action. In the first place, terpenes have a cellular action on botrytis: they disrupt the functions of cytoplasmic inclusions and cause death of the fungus. This is the so-called direct action of the product.
The second type of action is indirect. As the terpenes are volatile, they evaporate gradually once applied, causing the area around the berries to dry out, making the micro-climate less favorable to the development of botrytis.
At what stage of development are we?
An application for marketing authorization (MA) has been filed and is currently being evaluated. Approval is expected in the coming year. Until then, various technical institutes in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne will test the product. Moreover, by modifying the balance between the different terpenes, it should be possible to fight against other pathogens of the vine, "and not just mushrooms", underlines Antoine Meyer, president of Sumi Agro France, who does not wish The moment not to disclose which.

Technical and Information Bulletin No. 7 July 20

Bulletin technical and informative collective recommendation of the Peris team.

You will find in this issue of the month of July:

- Mildew:
Since mid-June, there has been a massive discharge of fruit-bearing tasks throughout the vineyard. This attack is noted in a first time on the vines of the littoral having the influence of the maritime entries. Then in a second time, we had a rise of the attack in the land ...

- Oïdium:
For this fungus, there too, there are numerous local symptoms on clusters. At the current phenological stage (cluster closure early veraison) a attack on cluster causes a burst of berries and therefore a gateway for Botrytis ...

- Botrytis:
The current climatic conditions (sea entrances and heat) and the ejection of berries due to compressions, all associated with relatively fragile bays of berries lead to an exit of botrytis on clusters ...

- Thiols:
Veraison began in the most early grape varieties. The supply of nitrogen and sulfur by the foliar route has a great influence on the aromatic profile of white wines. Indeed, this will make it possible to improve the concentration of assimilable nitrogen and precursors of Thiols in musts and will thus allow the release of aromas during vinification ...

- Harvesting: preparation and maintenance

Flash Mildiou Juillet 2017

An important outlet of mildew is in progress in many plots.
The months of June and early July alternating climatic conditions of high heat, rain or thunderstorms led to strong growth of the vine and factors very favorable to the spread of downy mildew.
Young shoots are particularly affected, but symptoms on clusters are also visible.
We remind you that the clusters remain susceptible to downy mildew (Brown Brown facies) as long as the veraison is not completely finished.
Late attacks can lead to heavy harvest losses ...

Let's go for the harvest in Alsace. Among the first to invest the vines, the grape harvesters of Rémy Wessang, president of the Geiler winery in Ingersheim. Very early harvests, due to the sun and rain, which boosted the maturity of the grape. A very small crop is expected.
It's gone for the 2017 harvest in Alsace, the secateurs are out. The date was set this Wednesday, by the AVA, the Association of Viticulturists of Alsace, at their general assembly. This is Thursday 24 August for Crémant and 30 August for AOC Alsace

The president of the wine council of FranceAgriMer expects a harvest less than 37 million hl, while the Ministry of Agriculture announces 37.2 million hl. For Jérôme Despey, prices for IGP and non-GI wines have to rise.
"We are exceptional in every respect," says Despey. Firstly because of the precocity of the grape harvest that started with 15 days to three weeks in advance. It is an unprecedented precocity. I've been a winemaker for 30 years. I had already started harvesting around August 15, but never on August 10, as this year. "

"Less than the ministry"

"Then the harvest will be exceptionally low due to spring frost and drought this summer. I am afraid that it is less than 37 million hl. "
An hour before Jérôme Despey spoke to the press, this August 25 at the headquarters of FranceAgriMer, the Ministry of Agriculture had published forecasts announcing 37.2 million hl (against 37.6 million hl, -July).
Jérôme Despey does not believe because of the drought prevailing in its basin, Languedoc-Roussillon, where the ministry announced 11.4 million hl while the producers think they will return less than 11 million hl .
"It will be the smallest harvest since 1945", announces the president of the wine council of FranceAgriMer. It should be remembered that by 2016, the harvest had reached 45.5 million hl.

"Lots of stocks"

Despite this, consumer markets should normally be supplied as stocks remain, especially in Languedoc-Roussillon. FranceAgriMer is not yet able to quantify them but Jérôme Despey insures that it is enough to visit the cellars to find that they are "important". Traders will find something to supply their brands, including those they have switched to Spanish wine.
Given the low harvest, "there is no reason not to find the prices of PGIs and Wines without a GI two or three years ago. There's no reason why we should not get 5 to 15 € / hl, "says Despey.
Then the professional manager came back on one of his favorite subjects: crop insurance. He regretted that he had no news from the Minister of Agriculture about two claims to the industry: lowering the threshold for triggering crop insurance by 30 to 20%, and replacing the Olympic average with yields.

Jérôme Despey also reiterated his idea of using the CMO aids to encourage wine growers to be cautious. But on this subject his position has evolved. While he was advocating that the aid be paid only to signatories to a crop insurance contract, he now suggested that it should be paid on condition that the applicant had subscribed to a "prevention tool": insurance, but Also the precautionary savings or the VCI.

Good to see a sell of 280k going through in one lump and only depressing the share price a little. There will always be sellers, for many reasons; no-one ever has to buy.
Fingers crossed it will be buyers once the interims are published.

Nice to see the weather in champagne:

25c and rain on Friday, followed by bright sunshine days in the high 20s to early 30s.

Should encourage vineyard owners to buy 3AEY to protect the reduced harvest quantity and even more importantly protect the quality of the downsized harvest.

Thank you. In a head to head 3AEY looks to be as you say a better solution. Let's hope that Eden maintains a lead in any future products the two companies produce.

Certainly potential competition but as I said in a previous post (below) IMO Eden have the better product; in addition the narrow approval for greenhouse cucumbers suggests the EU is using the precautionary approach and need more research before they approve it for field vegetable. In the EU documents there were un answered questions about how the Tea tree oil effected Anthrapods in the field... maybe this has restricted it's wider registration . Further test maybe underway, ..this we know can take years..

This also may illuminate the EU thinking;

Pesticides and non-target arthropods: EFSA reviews the science
EFSA has published an opinion on the risk posed by plant protection products to non-target arthropods. The document explains the science that will support the development of a full risk assessment scheme and is based on a review of the current scheme, taking into consideration recent workshops and advances in science. EFSA’s pesticide experts propose specific protection goals which aim to protect important ecosystem services such as food web support, pest control and biodiversity.
EFSA’s Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR) is currently revising its Guidance on Terrestrial Ecotoxicology. The Panel decided to split the task into opinions for separate organism groups, i.e. in-soil organisms, non-target arthropods, amphibians and reptiles, and non-target terrestrial plants. For each of the groups, it will first summarise the science behind the risk assessment and then develop practical guidance on how to perform the risk assessment.

An Alternate explanation maybe Stockton are targeting countries with high numbers of Greenhouse Cucumber producers . Spain being the 6th largest.

I think this unlikely though as they have acknowledged the value of the EU market together with it's higher standards of ecological protection etc creating a high barrier to entry. The narrow registration more likely reflects quite how high that barrier is and how much more detail is needed for approval in EU compared to other territories . In other regions they use TG on grapes so one might assume they are a crop they are targeting for registration. Full Eu registration would give them Germany and the Netherlands which together almost match Spanish production so doubling the market in cucumber protection. So a question I have is.. what stopped authorisation in these countries??

We need to watch this space for details on further authorizations .

Timorex Gold vs 3AEY.

From lay person scanning this:
in relation to the above my assessment is that 3AEY is a superior product.

Here's why IMO:

Timorex contains Tea Tree Oil (TTO)and Ethanol, it has toxic characteristic which are mitigated in the greenhouse by the absence of birds and Fish etc. In the field these characteristic are mitigated because it volatises/evaporates within 24hrs.

The toxicity of TTO means it is an irritant and workers need eye and body protection when spraying.

Also although it is not flammable, due of the Ethanol component it has to follow flammable liquid storage rules.

The inherent volatility means it has a short action window of approx 24hrs and can be sprayed up to 3 times per season with 7 day minimum intervals.

3AEY. The volatility of the terpenes is harnessed by the encapsulation technology which releases the active substances at times when plants ambient conditions are vulnerable for fungal growth. This slow release action means 3AEY stays on the plant, it's action is multiplied and environmentally triggered which means it is longer lasting than Timorex..so less spraying needed and potentially more potent and ready for action at vulnerable times.

No protective clothing needed when spraying.

Although Timorex has no MRL's it also I believe has no anti fungal value to the farmer post harvest due to volitisation so here again 3AEY has the advantage.

all IMHO.

Thank you for the links above. On reading your first link, that Timorex Gold had obtained registration for use in greenhouses in Spain I note that in the third paragraph Stockton CEO Guy Elitzur comments that it "Paves the way for the introduction of our expanding portfolio into the Spanish market." Also, that use of the phrase "from field to fork" implies Stockton is targeting field crops as well as crops in greenhouses.
Do we have a serious competitor?

Spain restricting Timorex Gold to Greenhouse use only.

STK (Stockton) announced that its biologic fungicide Timorex Gold® obtained registration from the Spanish Pest Management Regulatory Agency for the control of powdery mildew on cucumber and zucchini in the greenhouse.

While In Australia and New Zealand it is registered for Edible crops

STK (Stockton) has signed a Commercialization and Distribution agreement with Syngenta Australia (Syngenta). The agreement grants Syngenta the exclusive right to distribute STK’s Timorex Gold® biofungicide for application in edible crops in Australia and New Zealand.

Harvest 2017: production -15%, but the Italy beats France

With the posting of the first bunch of grapes on the farm Fabian, in the province of Brescia, in Franciacorta, officially kicked off the collection, with the Chardonnay grape harvest for the production of sparkling wines. According to Coldiretti the harvest 2017 in Italy is expected to drop between 10 and 15% compared to the production of 51.6 million hectoliters last year. If on the one hand, with the start of harvesting, the historical records of exports of Italy celebrates wine Made in Italy with an increase of 4.7% compared to last year when they had reached on an annual basis the 5.6 billion euros, against the beautiful country has to contend with a dramatic drop in production caused by unfavourable weather conditions. Nevertheless, the Coldiretti predicts a year of good/excellent quality, although a lot will depend on the months of August and September. Plant health looks good overall, the dry climate has encouraged the development of plant diseases and the sugar content will be higher on average. where-concluded Coldiretti – the first estimates for the 2017 give a production falling sharply on 2016, for an estimated total currently among the 36-37 million hectolitres due to frost. And wrong better not even in Spain where to cut production is drought that is putting a strain on the winemakers. Expected in Italy only from the sale of wine, 10.5 billion in revenue within a supply chain from job opportunities at 1.3 million people. This year though, remember the Coldiretti, "will, after ten years, the first harvest without vouchers. An instrument created to facilitate harvesting in 2008 ".
