So long as share price always recovers from the drops on ex-div dates and dilutions don't screw up the math

There are only two days when the share price matters, the day you buy and the day you sell. Between those dates, the dividend matters. Even if the share price remains flat, the divi gives you a total return of 10% pa. Better still, that 10% return is a banked return, not a 'paper profit' like a rise in the SP, which may not be there to be banked on the day you sell. I am profoundly indifferent to whether tomorrow's opening price is above or below 107, because I do not propose to buy or sell at opening tomorrow.

Its not a lot mate. I always worked hard and put everything in to rental properties, released equity as they went up and bough more. Got bored of buying anymore when I got to a decent sized Pf. Then few years ago started ploughing the profits into capital growth shares. SM in the transition stage of selling cap growth shares and buying distribution shares. Plan is to grow these types of shares, sell rentals and have same or more income without managing my pf myself. All going well so far and want to sell all properties over the next 11 years.

'only being allowed to put 40k pa in to an ISA for me and Mrs'.

Aah, such a middle class problem...

I read once that the ancient Romans liked betting so much that some would bet on the outcome of bets (derivatives? ;0). It's just entertainment, that's all.

I'll go for below 107p. Hell, 109.6 minus 2.9p is 106.7p, should be a slam dunk...

It can take a lifetime only being allowed to put 40k pa in to ISA for me and Mrs and SIPPs also come with their own issues when trying to get cash out

And for those whove sold and want to buy back hoping to get more shares. I thought about that but decided to hold and wait for dividend. Lots of options to ensure its all done in a tax efficient way. Sometimes its useful to sell and crystalise losses to offset against other gains and then buy back ex div

Here is a quote from DEC
"...we are evaluating both a dual listing and a complete US listing, aiming for the arrangement that will provide the most value and return for our stakeholders while best positioning the Company for continued success. We are deliberately and diligently working through this evaluation, engaging in recurring communications with our external advisors on the timing, type and effect of the US listing, and will make the final decision of the same and when appropriate in due course."

LG,
He does but he has also said that the company needs to have a $2bn+ market cap before this is feasible. That worries me as that would imply fund raising from shareholders in the absence of a share price rise.
Caught between a rock and a hard place at the mo.

Cassini,
I agree with you regarding the 'sticker' share price

I've been looking at the closest rivals to DEC (obviously all quoted on US exchanges) and their SPs have rocketed since the new year, primarily based on the increase in NG. I know DEC is heavily hedged but so are some of its rivals. There is something odd about the lack of movement in DEC. The NG price is up 5% today alone and now stands at 4.6 (it was 2.6 in April)
.
Look at the share price charts of Antero Resources or Range resources and you will see what I mean. I struggle to explain it other than DEC is not US quoted and is unloved or not trusted by UK investors and US investors would rather not invest in a UK company.

Well looks like I'm holding these through the ex-div date, they've been very sclerotic this time around in terms of price and as bountyhunter says, it's too much hassle to sell and buy back in later.

Of course, we may all wish we had sold regardless if they do their usual trick of dropping much more than the dividend over the next few weeks.

I have a theory though that the slow rise of the past few weeks will be 'stickier' than the normal moonshot just before the dividend.

We'll see.

Its a British company in FTSE 250 that's why they charge stamp duty.

I bet it drops by more than that at the open tomorrow but too much hassle plus the costs to sell and buy back. Also my broker charges stamp duty although they shouldn't really :(

Agreed, 2.91×.85 =2.4735p to be precise ;)
We will probably see all the normal questions regardless!

I'll add XD quarterly dividend to this post to help me search back to check mine when received!
