Fri 18 May 2018 (Sharecast News) - London stocks ticked just a touch lower at the open on Friday as investors paused for breath following a record closing high in the previous session. At 0840 BST, the FTSE 100 was down 0.1% to 7,780.87 after closing up 0.7% at 7,787.97 on Thursday, which was a record close and just below the intraday high of 7,792.56 seen in January, as energy shares benefited from a jump in oil prices. 18/5/2018 09:11 | QIt's generally accepted that hedge funds and shorters research stocks a lot more than those going long.Famed short seller Jim Chanos has said the most important function fundamental short sellers bring to the market, "is that they are real-time financial detectives" (from the Irish Times). As stated numerous times I'm not short here, wouldn't touch this either way. But you do seriously need to look at shorters in a different light. They provide liquidity and IMO any long term investor should, when the time is right, aim to protect their portfolio by hedging their bets in a downturn......shorts / longs are all about making a profit, one just sees it differently to the other but that's what in essence makes a market ultimately.DDps copy and paste something different ffs. | discodave4
18/5/2018 09:05 | niggle sorry mate, lot on my mind yesterday I now see what you meant. LOL robot, They are definitely "regrouping" instead of a group of say 10 there is a few less and the rest of them are losing focus wondering where the heck the CEO is leading them, but concerned they may be the next to face the chop. I had a browse in a Debenhams store yesterday, there was hardly anyone in the men's department the stuff looked cheap and drab. I noticed some boots with a price tag of £100 reduced to about £40 but the soles were hollow inside you can test this by banging the sole, a good treck and they would soon be pierced. Sad really because the poor being taken advantage of it one went to a better shoe shop or even made to measure they would be twice to 3 times the price but well worth the money. I have boots and had for over 25 years and still good leather. Some of the leather these days is just a facing to reduce cost but the soles on most shares have little depth of solid construction. I came away from the store thinking to myself that Debenhams is not going to survive much longer. | debsdowner

17/5/2018 17:39 | Blue is blueMacy's jumped 10% today as the doom and gloom and shorters filled this stock - but an active CEO delivered better than expected figures .Debenhams has been heavily shorted weighed down by generic doom and gloom. If the next trading figures defy those trends ,Debenhams could easily rise to well above 35p-40p. My short term price easily achievable is 25p. 17/5/2018 14:57 | From Ocado chat line.. I suspect lots of calls are being made to shorters for more funds to cover their accounts and if no funds available the short is being closed. This happened to a friend who lost £250,000 and had to sell 3/4 of his business to cover it. Please do your own research. | qantas

17/5/2018 13:20 | niggle, Time will tell but a number of directors resigned! That suggests to me they have had enough with management their actions causing unacceptable stress within Human Resources! You are making a wild guess things will improve the cull could be a warning of worse to come. I hope you are right and things will improve but the High Street in quite a grim place at the moment and I think things will get worse. | debsdowner

17/5/2018 11:58 | Yeh they sack a load of people just before they announce an improvement in figures! 😂😂 You’re in cloud cuckoo land! Every director who had been there more than 10 years (I.e. those responsible, on Mogadon watching it crash and burn and just saying ‘yes’) gone | niggle
17/5/2018 11:49 | The market will soon realise that they've written off the high street too soon. Nice base building here on the chart. | mreasygoing |
