COMPANIES & FINANCE UK & IRELAND: Danka Business

By Paul Davies

Financial Times; Jun 29, 2002

Danka Business Systems saw its shares rally almost fivefold between January and March of this year, after spending all of 2001 below 20p. The photocopier supplier has struggled since its acquisition of Eastman Kodak's photocopier business in 1996 and saw its debt peak at ý825m in 1998. The sector has endured difficult times as digital multifunction machines have taken over from the straight copiers of the past. Danka made gains of ý122m from the sale of various businesses and ý33m from a debt refinancing in 2001 - but this did not supply the impetus to lift its stock. Beeson Gregory, Danka's adviser and the only broker to cover the group, said the rally began after a stronger performance by Danka's US peers sparked UK investors' interest. Danka cut its debt to ý166m by March 31 2002 and managed to turn an operating loss of ý11.7m into a profit of ý15.4m, even as revenues fell. The shares have since dropped from a high of 86p to 50?p yesterday, down 1?p. Danka's turnround story is at an early stage and the focus on lifting margins and providing more value-added services to go with its new generation of printers and systems means there should be better to come. I am not an expert, but no offense to Oaks, ff has been in the right lately...

The date as quoted to me was 'the end of July'.

I don't think you will get in at 55/56. The simple reason is that if you divide the close on the Nas by 1.58 then you come out nearer 60p, plus a bullish mood, which means that (after i've topped up B4 open as well as others), it will bounce up a bit :0)

Why the bounce? Well its the end of the month, you will probably have noticed
the seventeen transactions of 500 ADRs (shown as "sells") between 20:33 and 20:39 UK time and a couple more at 20:58 just before close.

I presume these are "1996 plan" and "1999 plan" purchases which are at predetermined issue prices.

Oaks

I wish some of the cretins stateside would calm down. However, tremendous trading opps over there, it's easy pickings, they're so predictable. Made £5.1k today.

Ended 36c UP on Nas. I must confess I don't know why the bounce. However there was a 30k buy at the end today in UK & and a 30k buy early on across the pond. Perhaps as I've posted B4, that DANKY/DNK has CLEAN books and today its been highlighted a bout XRX having some ?able sales, then this bodes well for us. The first trade on Monday will be a substantial buy by me (if it doesn't gap up too much) :0)

Probably open 60/62
