Thought I would buy some shares in this 'unloved' firm. I notice Buxton of Schroders (2/1/) thought it was a good company for the prevailing climate.

Cheers. I've followed BPG for a while and know what you mean. Down this low with the directors buying at 10% higher than today feels right tho imo. Not without risk - the H1 statement was decent tho.

CR, be careful with BPG. Its been a dog for some time. They are struggling with ever increasing fuel cost and Rentokil warned recently that their City Link is not doing as well as expected.

Have a look at BPG then hawks - I've done the same buying there today.

Low fwd PE, directors upbeat and buying shares and if the internet sales are so strong they must be doing well imo.

I've joined the club today. It always makes me pleased when you buy and are in profit on day one and I see plenty more to come in the months ahead.

cheers, saw your post from earlier and agreed that it is way too cheap. A friend works for them and she says they are busier than ever, the recent restructuring has gone well and the business is firing on all cylinders, she had a baby girl two weeks ago and so on maternity atm.

Happy New Year mate

Chart's making a clear bottom imo.

If they are up on H1 as the T/S suggests then my bet is 90p eps this year and £1 next year. Fwd PE 7.7 for Charter?

Looks a screaming buy here imo.

PS - did anyone see this from Landsbanki on Dow Jones on the trading statement?

DJ MARKET TALK: Charter Statement "Encouraging" -Landsbanki

0832 GMT [Dow Jones] Charter's (CHTR.LN) trading statement is encouraging and the positive trends from 1H are continuing, says Landsbanki. Says the outlook is positive, noting the board's anticipation of further progress in '08. Says Monday's close at 760p is 40% off the recent high and shares now trade at a "notable and undeserved discount to the sector." Adds the current weakness is a buying opportunity. Keeps buy rating and 1350p target. Shares +3.4% at 786p. (KAV)

Tes, broker opinion and targets are codswallop. Look at the house builder sector. When these stocks were on their high they had tragets way higher still. As the prices tanked they lowered their 'buys' to holds but they just canno bring themselves to lower the price targets accordingly. This is because they have just put so many of their clients into these stocks that to do a reversal on the price so dramatically, within months looks, well, ere, stupid.

Eventually they get carried away with themselves and continue the trend so that when a stock bottoms they are often still recducing with silly sell price targets. They then find themselves chasing the other way with the share price target behind the actual price again, going the other way.

these have fallen from 1250p to 750p. They have to rise 70% to regain their old high. Nothing in the world has really changed other than the investors mind - and why wouldn't their mind change - all you hear is doom and gloom on the news - we've had it for 6 months now. But from the way I see director buying going on everywhere then none of them believe it.

Fwd PE 8.5 now, if the $ turns up as looks like it might then that will help CHTR more I expect. That after the recent trading statement looks a buy signal to me.

reducing a target price from 1150p to 800p after the share price is below 800p is a classic analyst after the events change.

Plus what I never understand is when they rate a stock as a 'hold' with a specific target price, e.g. here 800p. Surely it's one or the other. If the share price is actually 900p it's a sell, if it's 700p it's a buy.

Multiple director buying on top of good trading update. This should be much higher now and will be before long. Still ridiculously good value.

Seems Chtr is always hit by downgrades soon after good news. Odd and slightly suspicious if you ask me.

Difficult markets these, news that once sent prices up is having the opposite effect.

Fraid I've given up on Chtr until sentiment changes, or until results get closer.

umm, you are short ??
why you want to be wrong?

CHTR been bought up by the big guns, short term weakness before the move back north.

Just get your buy timing right....which should be soon - stock very over sold.

evidence appears that the world isn't really ending

Well, the sun rose this morning in Manchester, UK. Perhaps our USA readers will let us know if it fails to appear in a few hours time?

This comment from y'day probably had something to do with the fall:-

"LONDON, December 18 (newratings.com) - Analyst Oliver Wynne-James of Panmure Gordon maintains his "hold" rating on Charter Plc (CHRT.ISE). The target price has been reduced from 1,150p to 800p.

In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the company has announced its pre-close trading statement in-line with the expectations and expects to post its EPS for the full year marginally ahead of the estimates. Margins at Charter's Howden business are weak, the analyst says. The downward revision in the target price reflects uncertain economic growth trends in the North American and European markets, Panmure Gordon adds."

Seems that, in the current climate, people are assuming the worst for '08, and management positive comments about the order book will be ignored until sentiment markedly improves or evidence appears that the world isn't really ending.
