Phil - tempting as it may sound, the question is who may want to buy BRBY at this stage? I think for a company that generates a significant part of its business from China, any potential bidder would have to be confident it can meaningfully improve performance in that part of the world. In view of the fact that the luxury sector is struggling en masse in China, a potential bid is unlikely I think (naturally, I could be completely wrong here because in a world of record low yields, money needs to be deployed somewhere and the big boys are naturally attracted to M&A's). I would also say that - even though valuations look deceptively cheaper - as opposed to a year ago - what particularly worries me is the slowing rate sales growth. It has been going down for a good while and the situation does not seem likely to improve in the near future. As you know, I am watching closely here with the view to go long at some point. I think that point will arrive when most brokers will issue sell - rather than buy - recommendations. The proverbial throw in the towel moment. I don't think we are there yet so today I decided to open a short with a stop loss at £15. Have a good evening.

Hi tongosti , any thoughts on a takeover here now . Bailey seems to be struggling trying to hold down two jobs.

As I have mentioned here several times, BRBY is best avoided or shorted (for the braver ones). Going long is not an option at this stage.

Another retailer that just couldn't keep up with the changing face of the sector.RIP and join the other 'old school' retailers in the graveyard, who couldn't evolve & compete in the modern world.

SUNDAY TIMES

Burberry set hearts aflutter in the fashion world (not difficult) when it unveiled a television ad this month for its new cologne, Mr Burberry.

It is part of the luxury giant’s push into beauty, one of many levers being pulled by Christopher Bailey, the £8m-a-year creative boss and chief executive, to get Burberry moving in the right direction again.

Bailey’s problem, as ever these days, is China. The slowing economy and a crackdown on excess by the communist regime have hit the luxury sector hard. Burberry has not been immune.

At 18.4 times earnings, the stock continues to trade at a premium to its peers. This appears to be a reflection of past glories under [Hannah] Ahrendts rather than of its prospects, which look uninspiring.

The company will seek to turn the tide on Thursday when it gives a second-half trading update. This could get ugly. Sell.
