29/11/2012 09:18 | 28 November 2012 Last updated at 22:04 Billionaire investor Warren Buffett believes the US fiscal cliff may be solved by January rather than December. Congress has until 31 December to cut a deal to stop existing economic stimulus measures terminating and huge automatic spending cuts coming into effect. While Mr Buffett said politicians may miss the deadline, he thought a deal would follow shortly after. Warren Buffett: Fiscal cliff talks could miss deadline | traderabc

14/10/2012 14:09 | Warren Buffett has relatively recently been investing in the solar sector: Warren Buffett Invests In Uncertain Solar Energy: FSLR, NRG Dec 19, 2011 First Solar Inc. is the largest U.S. solar company by market cap. Earlier this month, a subsidiary for Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B), MidAmerican Energy, purchased the 550-megawatt Topaz project under construction in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., by First Solar (FSLR). On December 16, MidAmerican Energy acquired a 49% interest in the Agua Caliente solar project from NRG Energy (NRG). The NRG project, expected to be completed by First Solar in 2014, has the investment appeal of having a long-term purchase agreement from Pacific Gas and Electric for all of its energy generation, and the support of a $967 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy. ... Warren Buffett's Solar Investment Warren Buffett Bets Big On Alternative Energy By Jeff Siegel Monday, December 12th, 2011 ... This is about making money - and nothing more. And that's exactly why Buffett pulled $2 billion out of his winter coat pocket and bought First Solar's (NASDAQ: FSLR) 550 megawatt Topaz solar farm last week. Although the sector has been absolutely crushed this year, the long-term potential of solar remains solid. And now that shares of most public solar companies are trading so low - and the smell of consolidation is permeating through the industry - the smart money's sniffing around, looking for bargains. This is what Buffett found in his latest purchase: a utility-scale solar power project with a long-term power purchase agreement boasting some very attractive rates. Of course, I would caution that despite the bullish stories that have played out over the media since word of the deal broke, the solar industry still has some climbing to do to get out of the hole it's in today. Despite good news for First Solar, the fact remains that oversupply issues will likely continue well into 2012. Probably not until Q3 2012 will we see enough significant demand to really move that backed-up supply. Point is, the deal is positive for the long-term prospects of solar (Buffett wouldn't be in if that weren't the case), but its effect on the entire space is minimal... 5 Lessons from Warren Buffett's $2 Billion Solar Farm Purchase By Raz Godelnik | December 13th, 2011 ... 3. This deal is not necessarily a vote of confidence in the future of the solar industry "Let's be clear, this is not Warren Buffett taking a bet on solar technology," said Michael Horwitz, solar analyst at Robert W Baird. "This is Warren Buffett investing in a power plant that is guaranteed to yield large cash flows for at least 20 to 25 years," he added. "The power plant just happens to be solar powered." I agree with Horwitz. It's true that Buffett is no stranger to renewable energy and has invested in wind energyas well as in the Chinese electric car maker BYD, but at the same time he's not shy of investing in coal. The bottom line is that Buffett knows how to identify a good deal. Here it happened to be a solar energy deal. It's true that this deal will probably increase the level of confidence the markets has in solar, but we have to be realistic this deal is not a big statement about solar, it's just a good deal for both sides that took place because of favorable terms. This is why you won't see Buffett buying more solar plants unless he's got similar terms. ... PV Crystalox Solar (PVCS) could be a good way to emulate Buffett in trying to make money from the solar energy sector, and I think that it's the sort of 'value' investment that would have appealed to him early in his investment career: trading at barely a third of net cash at the interim stage (with no net debt), with hefty compensation settlements expected from two ex customers, and the possibility of asset sales. 04/3/2012 18:55 | Hi tenapen, stocks could be fine, if you get the right ones, it might be safer buying the etf of the actual individual commodities, or a basket of them, for example AIGA , but they aren't that good for the long term with their built in time decay. Buffet bought silver once,at historically 'the lows', there was something strange about the whole affair, as he claimed, years letter that he made little from it, I'm grateful he announced his purchase, as his action influenced me to buy silver too, (still holding) I don't trust the guy these days, when he came out with his support of the banks, that was the final straw. He might hate gold but he's right about Agricultural land, just as Rogers was right (years before Buffet) that agricultural commodities were/are the place to be. | traderabc
04/3/2012 18:01 | Warren Buffett loves to bash gold - claiming that stocks are inherently superior, because they produce a return, whereas gold just sits. Trouble is, stocks (and all paper assets) are subject to counter-party risk, whereas physical gold isn't. Gold doesn't overcompensate its CEOs, it doesn't leverage its productive capital in toxic derivatives, it doesn't cause industrial disasters like Deepwater Horizon, its value isn't dependent on central banking, or securitisation, or American imperialism, or the machinations of the military-industrial complex. It just sits, retaining its purchasing power. Warren Buffett had a great ride: he grew his wealth and businesses in an era of unprecedented growth powered by OPEC oil, and later by Chinese industrialism. That era - the era of the American free lunch - is coming to an end. His insights are applicable to that era. Today is a different world | traderabc

The advert was trying to sell a book suggesting it was a good idea to trade like a girl !! Well that's a new one on me !! .... .... My partner would be useless at trading - she says she would sell as soon as she got £50 profit ...... Yes that sounds typically GIRLY but it doesn't sound like a winning strategy to me .... ...
