ST: Re: "Yes, have a small holding in spirent. I do get the impression that the FTSE is being annihilated to orchestrate these low buyouts"

==============================================
Possibly but if I was johnny foreigner I would always think the Big "B" word makes UK investing a no go area - Unless I got nearly everything for more or less nothing....

Having said that it does look a good buying opportunity..

To be fair, most BT shareholders would probably fold for just a 20% premium lol

Going to have to wait for the shorts to have their full before this changes I suppose. On a positive note does allow for adding at a bargain imo

Shareholders in Spirent, which tests, measures and analyses telecoms devices, will receive 175p a share. Shares in Spirent closed at 108.4p yesterday. No doubt the 61 per cent premium will reignite the debate about whether the London stock market is valuing companies properly.

Sir Bill Thomas, chairman of Spirent, said: “Having considered in great detail the interests of all shareholders … the Spirent board believes that this all-cash offer recognises the underlying value of Spirent.”

More on the Berenberg upgrade in The Times today:

Berenberg made a welcome
call for long-suffering
investors in BT, questioning
whether the telecoms
group’s shares, having fallen
by 15 per cent since the start of the
year, had dropped too far.
The mood around BT has been
under several shadows of late — a
looming first results presentation in
May from Allison Kirkby, the group’s
new chief executive; a forthcoming
general election; and a move away
from consumer prices index-linked
retail pricing — all of which
Berenberg believes are “overdone̶1;.
Carl Murdock-Smith, an analyst at
the bank, believes these potential
“risk events” have contributed to BT’s
shares “being the worst in the
telecoms sector year-to-date”, but he
is confident that all are manageable.
“We had been thinking about turning
more positive after the full-year
results, but recent share price action
has persuaded us to act earlier,”
Murdock-Smith said as he lifted the
bank’s recommendation on the stock
to “buy” and suggested that by the
end of this year BT’s investment case
“should appear much clearer than it
does today”. Investors heeded the
advice, sending the group’s shares up
1½p, or 1.4 per cent, to 106¼p.
