Re Pension Deficit: Rising interest rates should have a significant effect on the pension deficit.

You would think that BT being on the LSE would have a larger exposure to the markets. No wonder their own shares are floundering.

Elementary solution would be to restrict income tax refief to holdings of UK incorporated equities only, or, to restrict IHT relief to SIPPS pro rata to their UK equity holding content only - job done and immediate boost to the value of UK equities!

I think the Vodafone Three merger is a positive for BT. Management time will be swallowed up by the merger so hopefully a loss of short term focus by a key competitor. Further out, Three is quoted as saying the deal allows them to finally make their cost of capital from the UK, which suggests they will be a rational competitor going forward.

HSBC downgrades UK markets and calls them ‘a drag’ within Europe

HSBC downgraded U.K. markets to underweight from neutral, according to a note from the British bank.

Its analysts described the U.K. as “a drag” within Europe as its equities are under particular stress compared to other nations.

The FTSE 350 is among the worst-performing indexes in developed markets, HSBC wrote, and it expects earnings to decline by around 2% in 2023. Bloomberg.
