19/4/2010 11:49 | This is Britain's research aircraft Unfortunately all its instruments are removed so the plane can be repainted! This has had the effect of rendering the United Kingdom closed to all commercial air traffic. FAAM's BAe-146-301 large Atmospheric Research Aircraft will not be flying to investigate this - primarily because the aircraft is currently on the ground with all instruments removed immediately prior to a repaint. | vikingwarrier
19/4/2010 11:46 | eurostar, car hire companies and hotels must be doing great business! | alanrex
19/4/2010 11:45 | I can just see aid being granted to airlines; including the foreign owned companies flying into Europe? Another example of GB not thinking things through. | alphorn
19/4/2010 11:43 | Maybe everyone has got used to travelling on not really important business travel? What's wrong with more video conferencing etc. Eurostar must be laughing all the way to the bank here! | ny boy
19/4/2010 11:42 | i read somewhere there is more activity being picked up from Katla - and that it could take up to six months to blow (based on history) | tomkin
19/4/2010 11:38 | i find it hard to believe that BAY would get help if they have so much cash, especially as we are approaching an election... all imo dyor | alanrex
19/4/2010 11:35 | The market is clearly betting against history today in that in the past three eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull it was followed soon after by eruptions of Katla, which lies below the adjacent, much larger ice cap. (Note: Katla is being monitored, but has so far shown no signs of stirring. Source Times). | alphorn
19/4/2010 11:31 | I heard on the 11am BBC radio news that Brown is looking at aid for the aircraft industry as a result of these events: "Mr Brown said the travel chaos was "a European-wide problem" that would need a European-wide solution and that money from the European Solidarity Fund could hopefully be used to help travellers and airlines." | bartram
19/4/2010 11:23 | reminds me of bank threads, trashed with garbage, JC: will be back later, after the clutter has gone and burnt, laters. | anony mous
19/4/2010 11:22 | Air seems a lot cleaner and fresher in London (where's all this ash gone too?), maybe all flights should be grounded until, the windows when I need to travel abroad :-) | ny boy
19/4/2010 11:21 | lack of braincells on here today. throw everyone you can at it, go on. LOL ! | anony mous
19/4/2010 11:21 | BBC science correspondent Tom Feilden writes in his blog: "Just because planes can take off, fly around a bit and come back unscathed, doesn't mean it's safe". Must be another short | cat100
19/4/2010 11:20 | let Lufthansa take over BA for a peppercorn at least the Germans are doing some real research | tomkin
19/4/2010 11:17 | Let them fail. That`s business. If Easyjet can stay grounded for 6 months why should we bail out BA? That would give them an unfair advantage over the more prudent operators such as Easyjet and Ryanair. | cosimpson
19/4/2010 11:16 | Germany is sending up a special flight with instruments to test the amount of volcanic ash in the nation's airspace. Some crack if it doesn't make it back | cat100
19/4/2010 11:11 | Sixty-three thousand flights have been cancelled in the four days since the clampdown began. Amazing Think of the amount of airline fuel used by the industry. | cat100
19/4/2010 11:10 | British pilots have called for a banking-style rescue of the UK airline industry, which has been ground to a halt by a volcanic ash cloud. The British Airline Pilots' Association (Balpa) said the financial impact "could not be more serious". "The government needs to step in and show the same approach it took to keeping banks afloat," Balpa said. "If it fails to act it will find that an equally-important foundation of our economy is lost." The airline industry is still struggling to recover from a global slump in demand for air travel, brought on by the economic crisis. It is estimated that the flight restrictions that have been in place since Thursday will cost airlines about $200m (£130m) a day. Balpa also called on action from the Europe Union. | cat100
19/4/2010 11:02 | The P&O Ferries website is currently down, having crashed through sheer volume of traffic. | cat100

19/4/2010 10:56 | BAY's insurance doesnt cover this according to the news.. | alanrex
19/4/2010 10:56 | No, act of god! Should be some damn good offers coming up for travel in May onwards. I assume if you pay for your schedule airline tickets by credit card you are fully refunded? | ny boy
19/4/2010 10:54 | doesn't BA have insurance against this type of scenerio? | jamrol
19/4/2010 10:51 | they are moving planes to one end of Heathrow as if they are been parked up for a while. Not looking good there. They are also going to use the Navy which tells me this has legs to run. The loss's are mounting and can't be recouped | cat100
19/4/2010 10:45 | Share price still too high IMO based upon the poor fundamentals; let alone the closures. Who is supporting the sp? | alphorn |
