Bit disappointed with the drop but looking to add as I love the sector. Is it worth paying the premium to go with Clarkson or invest in the potential here…obviously the suspension debacle raises questions about general management. Thoughts ?

Business must be going gangbusters. I can only imagine that sellers are those that questioned the remuneration. I want to add, but also choose the right time, so holding off for now.

Another plug for BMS from Master Investor:

"Master Investor subscribers will already know that my shipping services sector favourite stock is the much smaller £99m valued Braemar (LON:BMS), currently 298p, it is favoured by analyst Ian McInally at Cavendish Capital with a 385p Price Objective, which in my view is conservative.

Note that recently another global shipbroking group, Lightship Chartering, has been buying into its equity and rates the BMS shares as being cheaply rated."

More 'good' news with a tanker boarded in the Red Sea. Multiple sources.

Interesting quote in this article from Master Investor:

Braemar (LON:BMS) – Competitor Buying Into The Equity
With the re-routing of trade routes around the Cape of Good Hope, the global shipping market is now reacting to container freight rates rising for the last six weeks in a row, getting back up to the higher levels of October 2022.

It was quite a beneficial share price move on Monday, following the revelation that an ambitious Geneva-based shipbroking company has been putting together a ‘major shareholding’ in the group’s equity.

The new holding notification to the market states that Lightship SA has bought some 1m shares representing 3.04%.

That is said to be good news for players in the shipping sector, including shipbroker Lightship Chartering, which is 51.5% owned by Danish founder and chairman Morten Have.

Sune Fladberg, the private company’s CEO is reported as stating that:

“It’s quite simple, we believe strongly in shipping in the near future and are looking for opportunities to invest further in the industry.

We think the valuation in Braemar is very attractive at the moment.”

I reckon that the Lightship stake was purchased at around the 290p level, so at last night’s close of 300p, it is already showing its holding is well in the ‘swim’.

After hitting 310.60p on Monday morning, further price rises to trade well into, the 300p to 350p range can be expected within the next few months.

Good to see BMS heading through £3 again....have bought some more this am, just looks wrongly priced IMO...let's see DYOR and GLA

One should be invested in both Braemar and Clarkson IMO. Braemar has much greater upside but will be slower to move as it is too small for many investors. Clarkson will gain sooner but has less upside in the medium term.

Also, WHY does it take a PLC like BMS 4 months to pay a dividend?

CKSN benefited from consultancy as all the risk areas mean more advice is required on managing risk IMO....DYOR...agree BMS has hardly moved, looks unloved, needs some decent results and confidence in management again to move on...DYOR

Sure thing, and yes, that data point on containers is a fine illustration.

Agreed hpcg, the prime reason for my post was to emphasise the increasing journey lengths and difficulties at the canals, and thus the general point that rates are rising across the board.

rivaldo - containers are not significant to Braemar, it is the tankers and dry bulk. The canals impact everything really.

Per FT Alphaville the cost of container shipping worldwide is up more than 60 per cent this week, and sailing around Africa is adding 10 days to containerships’ journeys. All this has to be good news for BMS?

And as regards the possible closure of the Suez/Panama Canals:

"A closure of these key thoroughfares would boost container demand by 1.5% and 7% respectively. For tankers and bulkers, the closure of the Suez Canal would add roughly 30% to transit distances and boost fleet demand between 1-2%, according to their estimates. Longer supply lines tie up more vessels, boost freight rates, widen origin-destination spreads, and lift bunker demand. Furthermore, a worsening supply chain may be bullish goods demand as companies over-order to ensure adequate inventories. "

Absurd spread at the moment. Price has under-reacted even at Clarkson IMO. I have added spread bets in both. I have some substantial dividends turning up this month and they will certainly be directed here unless the price makes substantial progress. I imagine there is supply from the one or more of the institutions most upset about the pay policy. Lightship has probably taken a chunk out of that, already, which might give selling institutions pause for thought.

Good Clarkson results, but fully expected given their H1 compared to H2 seasonality in the past. I would be a little wary that BMS are not going to beat in my book because of where the expectations are. They did £6.7m underlying EBIT in the first half and consensus is at £17.5m for the full year, which looks high if anything.

This is partly because Cavendish are too high at £18m and Edison may be closer to the mark at £16.7m

But I don't think everyone should expect a beat this year because otherwise they'll end up disappointed.

rimau1 - that could possibly correlate with Lightships recent share purchases since, as another ship broking outfit, they will have great insight into current market trends.

Clarkson have this morning announced trading ahead of expectations with strong performance especially in broking. Strong read across here where i am surprised we have not moved higher with the recent small cap Santa rally.
