I agree with that, BHP has been in my income port since forever and the divis from it have been spectacular over the years, including the valuable demergers of S32 and WDS. Capital growth has been good too though that's not why I invest.

I pay no attention to forecasts of China demand or copper prices etc. and have no intention of selling.

BHP are also into copper, zinc and from 2026 phosphatesin a big way.

A commodities site suggested that the price of copper will double over the next ten to twelve years.

A long term hold in a diverse portfolio

Yesterday's facts?

China's population peaked in 2018. Sure, but 5 year olds don't buy properties.

The only Boom coming from China is their latest Space Rocket taking off for the Moon.

The Chinese government are not going to come to the rescue as they want to deflate the countries housing bubble. All these new apartment blocks that were being built as the real-estate companies thought the Chinese population would still keep growing for the next few years when in reality the Chinese population peaked back in 2018 and is now already falling.

It seems to me the most ill-informed and foolish decisions that BHP has made over the past few years is to sell off its Coal assets while keeping its Iron-Ore assets in full production.

More coal was used last year than in history while the shrinking Chinese population means less apartment blocks are needed to be built = less steel = less Iron-Ore needed and this is not going to change.

The right decision for BHP to have made for its share holders would have been to keep its coal assets while selling down some of its Iron-Ore assets.

loganair. Thanks for the Goldman Sachs doom & gloom. No doubt they will be buying in big time before they release more positive statements!

Those are appalling predictions for me as a divi investor, income being the only reason I invest in shares at all. But I've learned after decades of doing this that broker forecasts are completely unreliable so I'll continue to hold BHP forever, having already held it for an extremely long time during which the income has been spectacular, including the demergers of S32 and WDS.

Where next for the BHP dividend?

Following the release of the miner’s results, analysts at Goldman Sachs have been adjusting their forecasts and have now included their expectations for FY 2028.

First up, in FY 2024, the broker is now expecting the BHP dividend to come in lower at 119 US cents (185.4 Australian cents) per share. Based on the current BHP share price of $43.02, this implies a dividend yield of 4.3%.

Goldman then expects another cut to 106 US cents (165.1 Australian cents) per share in FY 2025. This will mean a yield of 3.8% for income investors.

The trend is expected to continue in FY 2026, with the broker forecasting a 97 US cents (151.1 Australian cents) per share dividend from BHP. This equates to a 3.5% dividend yield.

A final (modest) cut is then forecast in FY 2027 to 96 US cents (149.5 Australian cents) per share. This would mean a yield of 3.45% for investors.

Finally, the broker believes it will be time to increase the BHP dividend in FY 2028. It has pencilled in a fully franked 101 US cents (157.3 Australian cents) per share dividend for that financial year. This represents a 3.65% dividend yield.

In summary, that will be:

FY 2024 – 119 US cents
FY 2025 – 106 US cents
FY 2026 – 97 US cents
FY 2027 – 96 US cents
FY 2028 – 101 US cents

Positives:

Exposure to a diverse portfolio of commodities.
A focus on shareholder returns.

Negatives:

Economic outlook uncertainty.
Western tensions with major customer China.

Divi policy is a minimum of 50% of underlying eps. "Underlying" is the key word here.

Ueps for the year was 265 US¢

Divi for the year was 170¢

So payout ratio was 64%, thus exceeding their minimum.

This is equivalent to cover of 1.56, not the 3x that you say. I'd guess you are probably using the wrong figure of eps.

Being a lazy sod, I havent gone into the detail here, but I don't see the reason the divi has dropped so much when it appears to covered approx. 3 times!

Please can anyone explain. Ta in advance.

BHP Annual Profit Falls by 58% on Weaker Commodity Prices

Mining giant BHP said its annual profit fell by more than half compared with a year earlier, reflecting a pullback in commodity prices that has squeezed profits across the industry as China's economy stumbles and big markets like the U.S. grapple with sharply higher interest rates.

BHP, the world's biggest miner by market value, reported a net profit of $12.92 billion for the 12 months through June. That is down from a profit of $30.90 billion a year earlier when it had benefited from the sale of its oil-and-gas business and when commodity prices were at or near record highs. BHP said it also continued to grapple with cost inflation, especially in labor, diesel and electricity prices.
