02/12/2002 04:02 | I am short ISYS which looks to me to have shot up far more than it's worth at 66. This is more than it was before the profits warning 2 weeks ago when the price dropped to 42. The rise came as asset sales were completed 4 months ahead of schedule and yielded an extra £300m; the CE made bullish comments on Asian market prospects; and there was a report of an out of court Asbestos claim settlement (to which it has been rumoured ISYS may be susceptible) at the lower end of expectations (though another reported settlement ran to 1.5bn!). Regrettably, asset sales and bullish comments cannot by themselves magic more sales and profit. The extra £300m is worth approx £12m in interest but the company is still £1.5bn in debt and has a substantial pension scheme deficit. Invensys lost £58m in the first half, with the group predicting second half trading performance "at best" flat. Operating profit before exceptional items and goodwill fell to 209 mln stg from 229 mln last time, at the low-end of market forecasts in the 207-238 mln stg range. The group has consistently disappointed in recent years. Sales in continuing operations were down 8 pct to 2.67 bln stg, with core group sales down 9 pct at 2.128 bln stg. Results included a £93m negative sales impact from currency translation, with a £7m hit on operating profit. With low US interest rates and a loose fiscal climate, the dollar is unlikely to get stronger. If anything, it will get weaker. There's also the little matter of a £200 - 300m hole in their pension fund. With the share of investments in equities at 50 pct, and the balance in bonds, the pending erosion of bond prices as a result of the rise in UK govt borrowing is not going to help. "Both our capital and consumer end markets remain susceptible to the effects of further erosion in global confidence," said the group's CE. Business confidence in a recovery here is now pretty low for next year. US may avoid a double dip recession but Europe is nowhere near clear of it. One has to conclude the global outlook remains poor, and that must include Asian markets. The most optimistic share target after the results - from house broker UBS - was 60p. Deutsche bank's target was 42p. Whoever was bidding this up to the high 60s last week looks to be wildly optimistic. In the wider market, we may still get a spell of irrational exuberance. I am not sure though. The US failed to make progress on Friday, falling below the key 8900 level. But I respect David's views too much to go against him on this. | forwood | |
