Staley Wildly optimistic. Yes a lot of money was saved during the pandemic but Barclays seem to forget two variables. Firstly a lot of this money went on clearing existing debt. Now that has gone or been reduced will people really want to get in the same state again? Secondly there is still too much virus uncertainty. Sensible people do not throw cash about when they are still nervous about their jobs. Maybe next year or the year after memories will start to fade but this year will still be a write off.

So a bank ,Barclays, in a pandemic, with thousands dead, with thousands furloughed, with huge closures in the high street... with personal and national debt rising makes the biggest profit in 13 years. Tells you all you need to know about the way our financial system works..

Barclays. The Bank with no branches and cuts people credit limits.

There's a reason Barclaycard has been cutting it's credit lending rates so sharply - it's because they know what's coming down the road and they know it's not going to be nice and they're reining in borrowing to protect themselves.

Porty Jes has been topping up his bonus again:

Analysts were also disappointed by a 10 per cent increase in quarterly costs to £3.6bn and a warning that annual expenses would continue to rise in 2021, which helped send the bank’s shares down 5 per cent on Friday. The increase was partly due to an extra £335m top up to the bonus pool, which Staley defended as necessary to keep pace with US banks that were boosting bonus accruals at a faster rate.

Shocking share price reaction!

"Barclay enjoyed a record quarter at the start of 2021, hitting pre-tax profits not seen in 13 years" (£2.3bn)
