Hi josels,

I think the technical problem - if that is all it is - is that it's generally not allowed for a company to have a higher rating than the country in which it is incorporated......

IIRC HSBC had this issue for a number of years. Can't recall offhand how it was resolved. But wouldn't be surprised if Santander (apparently an equally sound bank) was caught up in this contagion.

With unemployment at 20% in Spain, property 50%-60% down, builders owe the banks millions, how does this not affect Spain and certaintly the spanish banks, Spain worries me more than Portugal.

Simple, They are a Bank of Spain and markets are worried by Spain's economic plight which may not be justified. But uncertainty is a killer in this game

Acamas , they are in my ISA a/c, so Selftrade take the easy option of mass opting for the divi.I don't know if it would avoid witholding tax by opting for shares.

wad collector,

I thought under the scheme if you said nothing you automatically got shares and did not pay the 19% Spanish witholding tax. You had to elect to take the dividend.

Do you have a nominee account with your broker and they have elected to take the dividend on your behalf?

edit:Shareholders who do not make an election will receive new shares unless they
have previously given (either in this program or in previous programs) the
permanent instructions described in section 3.2 below.

Thanks for that .Here was the response from selftrade:

There is no rights issue for Banco Santander. As part of an Optional Dividend service offered by Banco Santander you have been credited with Option Rights. The Rights are issued in connection with a dividend payment and offer the holder the right to elect to receive the dividend in cash or new ordinary shares. As we are unable to facilitate an Optional Dividend scheme you will automatically receive the dividend as cash. The Rights are shown purely for administration purposes and these will be removed from individual client accounts upon receipt of the cash dividend.

Wad its your BNC Share Script offer. You have till 5pm today to decide to take the free shares or sell them at source and pocket any profit. Its a profit return to shareholders by BNC like last year. You were given one right for every share and then are entitled to one free share for every 7 rights you own. Better hurry though only 15 mins left to decide.........!!
